The origins of Modern architecture are cause for debate amongst historians. Some argue that Modern architecture was a social movement caused by Modernity and closely tied to the Enlightenment. Others believe Modern architecture was stimulated by technological and engineering advancements as a result of the Industrial Revolution. The truth is probably found somewhere in the middle of both philosophies where enlightened ways of thinking and logic combined with the availability of new building materials such as steel, iron, glass and concrete and led engineers and architects to create a new type of architectural style—Modern architecture.

The style never gained quite the same popularity with residential architecture. The result is that current residences of true Modern architecture are rare and quite the jewel to find within the sands of the more popular Colonial Revival, Neocolonial Revival, Tudor, Victorian, Craftsman and Bungalow styles.

In fact, many homes classified by owners and agents as Modern are not pure. Since modern is often used to describe the state or age of a home, one must be careful when shopping for a truly Modern home. Decisions should be based upon the principles of Modern architecture and not the opinions of those uneducated to the actual style.

True Modern homes are quite simple in form and lack ornamentation. Building materials are often flat surfaced and synthetic, such as concrete or glass, giving the exterior a very clean and sleek look. Most are boxed shape because the form is created in regards to the function of the home.

Although Modern homes lack the adornments of other styles, do not neglect to see their simple beauty. Much like modern art, Modern architecture has a unique beauty that should be appreciated and understood for what it is, an enlightened style utilizing diverse materials to create a home whose form serves solely its function.
