Florida Living: Things to Do In Sarasota

Submitted by Adam Waxler

Sarasota is a popular city along the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida. Considering the variety of things to do in Sarasota Florida there's no wonder why this spot is now so popular with young families, second home owners, and snow-birds alike. Sarasota is a cultural haven with stunning beaches, acres of recreation, superb shops and art galleries. It is recognized for its radiant arts community, remarkable restaurants, unique shopping, and beautiful beaches.

Although it is just a medium-sized city, Sarasota is regarded by many to be the cultural core of west Florida. Sarasota is a "Circus Town" since it was previously the winter quarters of the "Greatest Show on Earth". The work and contributions of John Ringling, of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, have made the city a cultural capital. Sarasota is even home to the Ringling School of Art & Design. The city also has a metropolitan quality unique to cities of its size . In downtown Sarasota you can go to the Friday night gallery walks, catch the music every month at "Downtown After Five" or spend a Saturday morning at the Sarasota Farmers Market .

However, it is the location on the Gulf of Mexico that really gives Sarasota it's charm. Sarasota County boasts 35 miles of shorelines and six barrier islands. And these are not your typical beaches. The pure white sand of Siesta Key or Lido Key is going to take your breath away. At Siesta Key,you can snorkel for sea sponges on Crescent Beach, or journey a little farther south and wade through gentle surf to gather shark teeth on Venice Beach.

Obviously, being on the water, Sarasota is also a hot spot for boaters.. Sarasota Bay is a 56-mile long coastal lagoon made up of one large bay segment (Big Sarasota Bay) and lots of smaller bays including Palma Sola Bay in the north and a series of three contiguous bays to the south. Sarasota Bay is perfect for fishing, water skiing, or just relaxing on a boat in the gorgeous sunny Sarasota weather.

As you can see there are several things to do in Sarasota Florida. Whether you are looking for a place to sit back and relax or a place to go out for a little excitement, Sarasota Florida really has everything you need.
