How to Prepare for Unemployment

One of the worst things that can ever happen to you is for you to lose your job. This is especially true when you are involved in one or more of the following situations: you love your job so much; your job pays so well; or you cannot afford to be unemployed with your current economic situation.

With the current global financial crisis and unemployment rates hitting skyrocket high, this is not a farfetched scenario. Today, you can be secured with your job but you never know what is going to happen tomorrow or the day after that. Millions of jobs all over the world are being lost because many companies need to cut down on employees or shut down completely.

This is why, everyone needs to prepare for the possibility of unemployment or redundancy. It is wise to be prepared so that you would not have too much difficulty in the event that you lose your job.

There are various ways on how to prepare yourself for unemployment. Here are some of the important things that you need to think about:

1. Save, save and save.

Saving money is one of the best ways to protect yourself against unemployment. A percentage of your monthly salary should be allotted for savings so if in case you lose your job, you have sufficient money to cover your daily expenses. Open up a savings bank account and deposit faithfully a percentage of your salary into it every month.

2. Get payment protection insurance.

Payment protection insurance is another effective way of preparing for redundancy. This type of policy intends to replace your monthly source of income or pay outstanding debts or mortgages in the event that you lose your job due to sickness, accident or involuntary unemployment.

Search the financial market for the best mortgage payment protection quotes. You can also consider shopping online since there are many great deals on insurance products in the Internet.

3. Get some side jobs.

Having other sources of income will help you greatly if you lose your primary work. If you feel that your current job is in danger, you should also start sending out resumes. It is not wise to wait until you are fired before you start doing so.

4. Impress your employer.

Be a model employee. Be the kind of employee that would be hard to let go. Go to work on time, be innovative, contribute fresh ideas, ensure responsibility and do your best all the time. This way, when it is time to lay-off employees, you will be the last one to go.

5. Plan your expenses.

Set a budget and stick to it. Make sure you cut down on unnecessary expenses that you can do without so that you can have bigger savings in your bank.

Losing a job can be a painful experience but this is not the end of the world. Coping with job loss would be much easier if you have taken the necessary precautions to prepare for such event.

 

There are several ways to protect yourself against unemployment such as saving money, finding side jobs, being a good employee and getting payment protection insurance.
