Playa Del Carmen Gears Up For Christmas Season

Submitted by budniak

Playa Del Carmen provides a wonderful backdrop on which to enjoy the glory of the Christmas celebration. Enjoy your holiday season in a beautiful Playa Del Carmen beachfront condo.

The Christmas season goes from December 3 to February 2. The Celebration for the Virgin de Guadalupe – the most important figure in Mexico – goes from December 3-12. Psadas runs from December 16 - 24, then Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) and Christmas day, followed by Dia de Los Reyes on January 6. El Dia de la Purificacion on February 2 completes the season. A professional Mexico real estate agent can explain Christmas events in more detail.

Posada (theatrical reenactments) takes place every night from the 16th through the 24th. Children dress as Jesus, Mary, angels, and shepherds. They reenact the Bethlehem scene each night and each night Mary and Joseph are denied shelter. During the final posada on the 24th, Mary and Joseph are finally given shelter. Midnight mass traditionally takes place after the last posada.

Pastorelas are reenactments of the shepherds' adoration of the Christ Child. As the shepherds try to follow the great star leading them to Bethlehem they are encounter a series of evils and misadventures provoked by the Devil. In the end, good triumphs over evil and the shepherd's reach their destination. If Mexico is your destination, a Mexico real estate agent can help you find property for sale.

The Pastorelas were introduced by catholic priests as part of the process to covert Mexico to Christianity. Jesuits witnessed the Aztecs using a type of theater to worship and adopted the idea to reenacting the journey of the shepherds.

The main meal of the season occurs on Nochebuena or Christmas Eve. The supper is at 12pm, and often consists of turkey, as well as Romeritos (a herb) in Mole (a spicy chocolate sauce) with shrimp and potatoes; and Bacalao - cod served a la vizcaina, a Basque dish. The traditional dessert is colación, a mixture of candies in syrup.

People usually sleep in on Christmas Day – hung over from the meal the day before. Eventually, they open presents. The meal from the night before is reheated as many enjoy boxing on television. You can enjoy Christmas in your dream home, just contact a local Mexico realtor.

On December 28, Mexican's celebrate the Day of the Holy Innocents, a religious commemoration of King Herod's order to slaughter all male infants in his kingdom, intended to include the Christ Child. In Mexico it is celebrated much like April Fools Day is in the United States. It is a time for jokes and pranks.

It is customary to eat 12 grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve – one for each strike of the bell. It is believed to bring good luck in the coming year, a custom is to eat 12 grapes at midnight, each one on the strike of the bell, for good luck in each one of the following twelve months.

Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings Day) is celebrated on January 6. Children especially enjoy this holiday because they receive more presents. The highlight of the day is the cutting of the rosca – a doughnut shaped cake with small plastic “child gods” hidden inside. If you find a figure in your cake you have to buy the tamales on February 2, Dia de la Candelaria, Purification Day.

Celebrating Christmas in Mexico is an exciting and unique experience. Mexican culture and tradition are rich and vibrant. Ask your local Mexico realtor to send you information about Christmas in Mexico.
