Retire Guanaja Honduras, Why Not!

What are you looking for in your retirement years? Something affordable, a place to enjoy your favorite outdoor activities or maybe somewhere you will never have to even see a snow shovel again? There are many questions that need to be answered when you consider the place that you may spend the rest of your years, or at least the next few!


Have you considered that the United States may not be able to answer all your needs? Many of us retirees have a bit of the wanderlust and want a little more adventure before we end our days. South of the border may be the answer to your dilemma. There is a small island off the coast of Honduras, in the Bay Islands, called Guanaja. Guanaja Honduras is a tropical gem of an island that has yet to be discovered by the masses. Property is still affordable and the islanders are warm, friendly and many speak English.


Honduras is a Constitutional Democratic Republic with three independent branches of government, the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary to provide checks and balances to any single concentration of power. Elections, like the United States are held every four years for president and his three, yes three vice presidents! I do not even want to know why they would need three VPs.


The currency in Honduras is the Lempira and is named after a national hero that led the unsuccessful resistance to the Spanish conquistadors. One US dollar equals about nineteen Lempira or "limps", as everyone calls them, and when you buy locally and see all the prices in hundreds of limps it confuses Americans at first, but just divide by twenty and you will be pretty close.


Guanaja Honduras, in fact all of Honduras, lies in the tropics and while temperatures are affected by what elevation you are at, generally speaking Guanaja temperatures range from roughly seventy degrees at night to about eighty five degrees in the day time. This would be the average for the year around. The rainy season is from October through January with the average for the year at about ten and one half inches per month.

This Bay Island has a lot to offer in the way of outdoor activities. Protected by the world's second largest barrier reef, this has been a hot spot for scuba divers and snorkelers for years. Utila, one of the other Bay Islands, boasts a large population of whale sharks. This is the world's largest fish measuring in at forty feet. Just imagine swimming with one of those guys! The whale shark, fortunately, only eats plankton so swimmers have nothing to fear from this gentle giant.


Fishing is also terrific with a lot of migratory fish swimming through these Caribbean Sea waters and, for the fly fisherman; bone fishing is world class in the flat areas around Guanaja. Truly something for every type of angler!
Guanaja is the tallest of the Bay Islands with the highest elevation being at sixteen hundred feet. There are some terrific hiking trails around the island and several fresh water waterfalls. Perfect for drinking or swimming!


Next time you sit down and think about where you will spend your golden years consider a small island in Central America, Guanaja Honduras, it may be the perfect answer!
