Rhythm and Blues in Memphis Tennessee

Submitted by eastbiz

Memphis is a city on the Mississippi River, in Tennessee, with a population of a little
less than 700,000, and over 1,200,000 in its greater metropolitan area, including parts
of Mississippi and Arkansas. It is a regional center for trade, manufacturing and culture
in the Southeastern United States.

There is considerable interest in Memphis’ heritage in the rhythm and blues
business. Blues performers like B.B. King got their start in the nightclubs of
Beale St., which is a district that has gone a considerable rehabilitation over
the last 10 years. To this day, Gibson Guitar maintains a manufacturing facility
in Memphis, and the Gibson Beale St. Showcase is also a restaurant, performance venue
has a gift shop worth visiting. At the same location upstairs, you can tour the actual
factory. Another attraction of Memphis is their carnival, which has been compared to the
Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Memphis Real Estate in the midtown district has had considerable urban renewal and
an attraction to younger and hipper population. Attractions include Overton Park, the
Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Memphis Zoo and the Memphis College of Art. Other
schools in the area are Rhodes College and Christian Brothers University. The Christian
Brothers are a Catholic Teaching Order, and the campus is quite large, 75-acres, near
downtown Memphis. Memphis College of Art is a small school near Overton Park and adjacent
to the Museum of Art.

A sought after neighborhood in the downtown area is Harbour Town, a portion of
“Mud Island, which is actually a peninsula jutting out into the Mississippi River.
Parkland runs along the river in this section of town. There is also a Mud Island
Monorail, which has two stations, runs from the Convention Center on Front St., to the
Mississippi River Museum. It travels at 7 mph, for a 1/3 of a mile trip, with exciting
views of Mud Island River Park and the Mississippi river. There are extensive exhibits
at the Mississippi River Museum on the history of steamboat travel on the river. These
include exhibits on the building of river boats, their furnishing and other artifacts of
this important era. In the summertime, there is a lot more recreation in the river at
Mud Island. You can rent a pedal boat for two, and enjoy a lazy time in Old Man River.
There is also a scaled down model of the Gulf of Mexico to float your boat in as well.
Another midtown attraction is the Peabody Place Museum, home of the nation’s largest
collection of 19th century collectibles from China. The Museum, located at 119 South
Main St., is in the concourse level of the Pembroke Square building.

FedEx maintains a central facility in Memphis, which has helped make the Memphis
Airport one of the largest cargo handling airports in the world. The FedEx Memphis
facility is capable of sorting 160,000 packages and 325,000 letters an hour. The city
has enjoyed a central location, both from an air travel standpoint, and also the meeting
of east-west and north-south rail lines. Corporations such as FedEx Corporation, AutoZone
Incorporated and International Paper have made Memphis their home.
