Most of us will agree that moving into a new home or relocating to a new area can be exciting. But planning and executing the actual move itself and arranging transportation is a daunting task. If you're moving because of a new job or just to try out something different, you'll need help with transporting your goods or storing your personal belongings while you find a place to live. Self Storage is the answer.

If you're trying to sell your house and buy another one, or if you're changing from a larger to a smaller home, the use of a self storage facility can help make the transition a smooth one. Often, when moving because of a job, your new workplace will house you in a temporary apartment or home while you search for a permanent place to live. This temporary housing is usually very minimal and lacks the space for all of your personal belongings. In this case, a self storage facility in your new town can be the drop off point for all of your home furnishings and shipping boxes, and will allow you easy access to those items once you are ready to move into your new home.

Real estate agents will tell you that the best thing to do in order to help them sell your home is reduce clutter. Prospective home buyers are more likely to place offers on homes that look clean, organized, neat, and tidy. That's where a self storage facility can help. By taking all of the excess items out of your home before starting the sales process, this unsightly clutter will be out of the way of potential home buyers who tour your home and increase your chances of selling your home quickly.

You can pay monthly for an individual storage unit or for larger specified blocks of time lasting several weeks, months, or years. So if you only need a few weeks to find a new home or apartment and don't have anywhere for your moving company to deliver your belongings, a self storage unit is a great option to use as a drop-off point. You may also find that you want to continue to store some items to reduce the clutter in your new home as well.

Self storage and truck rental companies all carry their own lists of restrictions on which types of items they will or won't allow so do careful research and ask a lot of questions when developing your relocation plan. Generally explosive items, ammunition, or weapons are not allowed.

Many self storage facilities or rental truck companies will stock packing supplies like packing paper, bubble wrap, and specialties boxes which you can purchase. Keep the weight of your boxes at less than 35 or 40 pounds because this will make them much easier to handle and lighter boxes are less likely to tear. Mark your boxes according to the room they came from in your home so you'll know where to put them when you go to unpack the boxes again. Make sure to label delicate boxes "Fragile" in large bold letters and be sure to stack these boxes in a separate place so that they are less likely to become damaged during load in or load out.

There are lots of websites available to those looking for a good self storage facility. It can be difficult if you aren't familiar with where you are moving, especially if you're planning relocation to another state.
