Submitted by christinaxio@ymail.com

Lofts are the spacious accommodations that are built on the upper part of the old industrial buildings and are used for both residential and non residential purposes. Recently development of lofts has increased to an enormous amount by the real estate businessmen and a large variety of the lofts have been formed. They are located near the downtown and have very high ceilings. These ceilings are usually not lentered and the wooden logs along with all the pipes are visible. The windows are large from ceiling to floor allowing good ventilation and illumination. They have wooden floors, metal stairs, metal appliances and modern furniture. They have no courtyards.

The lofts that have been developed from the industrial areas are known as ‘hard lofts' and those that have been newly constructed for living purpose are known as the ‘soft lofts'. Among the residential lofts most common and well known are the attic lofts. These areas were previously used by the home owners for storage purposes but now they are used for living as bedrooms or are rented out to get some money. These attic lofts are located in the upper rooms of the home.

Bi-level lofts which are also known as the artists loft have extremely high ceilings with used to live in this kind of accommodations to save their money. In the present era promotion of such lofts have been occurred through movies. Many lofts in New York are of this kind. These kinds of lofts are rented and sold out to artists, painters and designers. One has to prove himself as artist to get these lofts.

Industrial lofts are the economical lofts that are developed as renovation from the old warehouses. They are cheap and an average man can buy and live in them. They have no interior walls and high ceilings. In the modern era multiunit lofts have also been built that have interior walls and enclosed bedrooms. They provide a good living for the families. There can be single bedroom or double bedroom lofts. They basic structure of high ceilings, large windows and floor plans is present.

The commercial lofts include live/work loft, in which the loft in the upper part of the room is used for the president's own business. This helps to cut the cost of fuel and travel and you can store your products at home too. It has a kitchen and bathroom with a shower. Live/work loft rental is the work done as a charge for living in the loft. Some people pay lease for living in the lofts from their accounts. Rigging lofts are built in the shipyards. Workers stand here while fitting the rigging. Other important types are Parachute loft and Sail Loft. Studios or the efficiency lofts are the ones that have only one room with kitchen and bathroom. They are used by artists and film makers as studios.

Loft conversion is a very common practice now a day. A large part of the home or whole of it is converted into loft to create extra space for the bedrooms or study as per needed.
