York Minster Cathedral

Submitted by SamBenson

Allow me the pleasure of describing one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the World: York Minster Cathedral.

York Minster cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and currently resides in the historic city of York, England. It is famous for being the seat of the second highest office of the Church of England (The Archbishop of York). Its formal title is The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York.

It has a large decorated Gothic chapter house and nave. The nave is the home of the West Window, which was first built in 1338, and above the Lady Chapel over in the east end of the cathedral is the “Great East Window”, which happens to be the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world.

Between 1900 and 1999 there was heavy focus on a need for preservation within the cathedral, especially when a survey taken in the early 1970’s revealed the building, in particular the central tower, was close to collapse. Thankfully around two million pounds was raised and work began on reinforcing and strengthening the building foundations and roof. In an unexpected turn of events; remains of the north corner of the Roman Principia were found under the south transept. But 12 years later a fire destroyed it, and around £2.5 million was spent on repairs.

And finally, in 2007 restoration began on the East side of the building, focussing the majority of work on the “Great East Window” at the cost of a jaw dropping £20,000,000.

In 1988, the children’s BBC television program; Blue Peter held a competition in which viewers had to design the Bosses for the new cathedral.

I personally remember entering that competition but unfortunately didn’t win, I hope the winner appreciates being a part of something so beautiful as York Minster, I know I would be!

In 2005 I jumped ship and moved from Devon to York and I must say, Renting Property in York was one of the best decisions I have EVER made. I couldn’t possibly be any happier than I am now!
