With the stomach and other digestive organs in a state of perfect health is totally unaware of its existence, except in the sense of hunger calls attention to the fact that food is required, or satiety, which puts us guard against a number enough or eat too much ha ha. Perfect digestion can be maintained only by careful observation of health standards with regard to eating habits.
nOn the subject of hygiene of digestion, we quote a few paragraphs from Dr. Kellogg's work on the physiology, which provides a summary of the most important points related to the following:
n"The hygiene of digestion has to do with the quality and quantity of food consumed as food.
nIf food is eaten too quickly, do not divide properly, and if swallowed in large pieces, digestive juices can not easily act. Due to insufficient mastication, the saliva will be insufficient in quantity and, consequently, the starch is not digested, and the stomach can secrete a sufficient quantity of gastric juice. Thus, not only eat soft foods or liquids, as will swallow without chewing properly. A considerable proportion of hard food, which requires thorough mastication, should be consumed at each meal.
nFree to drink with meals is harmful, because it not only encourages hasty eating, but dilutes the gastric juice and thus reducing their activity. Food should be chewed until sufficiently moistened by saliva so that it can be swallowed. When large quantities of liquid are taken into the stomach, digestion does not begin until one o'clock in the liquid absorbed. If food or drinks are taken with food such as ice cream, ice water, milk or iced tea, the stomach is chilled, and a long delay in the process of digestion is done.
nIndians of Brazil carefully abstain from eating, drinking, and the same custom prevails among many other barbarian tribes.
nEating between meals.
nThe habit of eating apples, nuts, fruit, sweets, etc, between meals is very harmful, and some produce a loss of appetite and indigestion. The stomach and the muscles and other organs of the body needs rest. The frequency with which meals should be taken depends somewhat on the age and occupation of an individual. Infants take their food at short intervals, and because of its simple nature, they are able to assimilate very quickly. Adults should not take food often as three times a day, and those whose employment is sedentary say, in many cases, at least, with the advantage of the adoption of the plan of the ancient Greeks but they ate twice a day.
nSimplicity in food.
nTaking too many kinds of food in a meal is a mistake that is often the cause of a disease of the digestive system. These countries are the most resistant and durable, whose diet is more straightforward. Scottish farmers are mainly oats, potatoes, milk and oatmeal, the Italian peas, beans, macaroni, and chestnuts, but all are characterized by the remarkable health and endurance. The natives of the Canary Islands, very well developed and vigorous race, subsist almost everything to a food which they call gofio, consisting of cereals, toasted, coarsely in a mortar and mix with water.
nYou have enough to eat when.
nThis is not to eat when exhausted by violent exercise, because the system is not ready to do the work of digestion well. Sleeping immediately after eating is a harmful practice. The process of digestion can not be performed during sleep and sleep is disturbed by the ineffective efforts of the digestive system. Thus, the famous evil effects of late suppers.
nEating too much.
nHasty eating is a major cause of overeating. When you eat too fast, food is stacked in the stomach so fast that nature has no time to cry, "Enough", by removing the appetite before, much has been eaten. When excess food is taken, it is likely to ferment or acid before being digested. He who eats too boring usually feel after eating. "
