The Importance of Food SafetySubmitted by searchrankpros7 Tue, 8 Dec 2009
No-one should ever underestimate just how important it is to have proper food safety training. When you work in the catering industry it is vital that your customers know they are eating food that is safe and that the people preparing it practice good hygiene methods.
There have been a lot of documentaries on television over the years that have exposed shoddy set-ups in the food industry. It is because of coverage like this that consumers are far more aware of what can be going on ‘behind the scenes' in restaurants and cafes. Anyone who has got a catering business needs to make a conscious effort to reassure their clientele that things are always done properly in their establishment. One way of doing this is to have a food hygiene certificate on clear display somewhere that customers will see it. The best way to understand the situation is to imagine that you have visited your establishment to get something to eat... When you are a customer and you go into a cafe or restaurant for something to eat you do not want to be wondering if the chef remembered to wash his hands or not. You want to know that hygiene has remained paramount during the preparation of your meal and that all procedures have been followed correctly; that work surfaces are kept clean and that food has been stored in the correct manner. If you do not feel confident that the staff have had adequate food safety training then you are not going to enjoy your meal and you are certainly not going to be coming back again! Of course, ninety-nine percent of cafes and restaurants pride themselves on running an establishment that is clean, tidy and up to date with all of the regulations in food safety training. But, unfortunately, there are always one or two places to spoil things for everyone else... The internet is an invaluable tool for employers who want to find training services for any new members of their staff. It will only take a matter of a few minutes to track down somewhere nearby that offers the right type of food safety training for your employees. Like everything else, there are going to be different courses to do and various certificates to attain. You will need different qualifications for restaurant work than you would for running a burger van at festivals and car boot sales. You may think that hygiene in the kitchen is something that is just common sense (and for the most part you would be right) but this is very different to having actual proof that you have attended a food hygiene course. And common sense is not as common as you would think! There are actually quite a lot of people who do not realise how important it is to follow basic hygiene procedures when they are handling other people's food. That is the sad reason why there have been so many programmes showing the terrible way that some businesses operate in the catering industry.
Richard Mendleton has been on many a food hygiene course. For more information, please visit http://www.highspeedtraining.co.uk/
