Easy Low-fat MealsSubmitted by neillisa Thu, 11 Jun 2009
Low-fat cooking is fast becoming the trend, but many American kitchens have yet to adapt this approach. It\'s not that they\'re not thinking healthy-many of us are just under the impression that low-fat meals are bland and flavorless. Well, that\'s not always the case. There are several ways to cut down the fat in your meals without giving up any of the flavor. Sometimes the low-fat alternatives taste even better than their full-fat counterparts. Here are five ways you can eat healthier while still enjoying every bite.
Little substitutions It\'s never a good idea to change your diet overnight. You need to give your body time to adjust to your healthier lifestyle. Start with small changes, like switching from mayo to mustard or having whole wheat instead of white bread. Work your way up until you have a completely healthy diet. Vegetarian meals Everyone knows that vegetarian diets are much lower in fat and higher in essential nutrients. And with the variety of vegetables in the market, there\'s no way you can run out of vegetarian meal ideas. If you can\'t give up meat altogether, simply replace one meat dish or two every week with a vegetarian one. Crock pot cooking Much of the fat content in a typical dish comes from the additional flavors added while cooking. Slow-cooked foods don\'t need any of that because the process seals in all of the flavor. Not only do you get a lower-fat version of your favorite dishes, you also get a richer, more natural flavor that you simply don\'t get on the stovetop. Light snacks Instead of three meals a day, divide your daily intake into five or six small snacks. This keeps you energized all day, rather than giving you a temporary boost with every big meal. Stock up on healthy snacks you can grab anytime, such as fresh veggies and dip, fruits, or whole wheat crackers. Healthy desserts Eating low-fat doesn\'t mean giving up desserts altogether. If you have a serious sweet tooth, just switch to fresh fruits or fruit-based desserts such as fruit salad or cobbler. Slow-cooked desserts have lower fat content and are much more filling than other sweet treats.
Who says low-fat eating has to be dull and boring? There are lots of ways to liven up your meals without piling on the calories. Read on to find out how.
