I also thought so. Until I gave this problem a serious thought and did some research. In fact, in our days it's quite easy to live without sugar and still enjoy the greatness of sweet food. There are plenty of natural sweeteners on the market, most fruits are available during the whole year, either fresh, canned or deep-frozen, and you can find uncountable sugar-reduced or sugar-free recipes. <br /><br />Here are some healthy snack ideas that can do without sugar added and still are indulgingly sweet: <br /><br /><b>Snack #1: Fitness Muffins</b> <br />1. Mix 170 g flour, 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and ½ teaspoon salt in a bowl. <br />2. In a second bowl, beat 2 eggs, 50 ml vegetable oil, 75 ml low-fat milk and 50 g honey until smooth. Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and mix well. <br />3. Add 180 g chopped apple, 150 g grated carrot, 1 tablespoon fine coconut, 40 g raisins and 20 g chopped almonds and mix well.<br />4. Set 12 paper moulds into a muffin pan and fill them to ¾ with dough. <br />5. Bake the muffins in the preheated oven on 180°C for about 25 minutes. Afterwards, allow them to stand in the pan for 5 minutes before taking them out. <br />I love these muffins for two reasons: Firstly, they are easy and quite quick to make. And secondly, you can keep them in a closed container in the fridge for quite some time. I once forgot about some muffins, and after a month they still tasted as juicy as when I just made them. <br /><br /><b>Snack #2: Fruity Yoghurt With Almonds</b>  <br />Mix 125 g plain low-fat yoghurt with a handful of blueberries or quartered strawberries and a tablespoon of almond flakes. You may want to add a bit of cinnamon to make it more special. <br /><br /><b>Snack #3: Fruit Salad With Nuts And Mint</b> <br />Cut a small apple into bite-size pieces and a small banana in thick slices. Cut a handful of seedless grapes in half. Chop 2 tablespoons of walnuts. Add 2 heaped tablespoons of oats and mix all the ingredients well. Create some exotic flavor with fresh or dried mint. <br /><br /><b>Snack #4: Banana Pineapple Shake</b> <br />Cut a small banana in thin slices and blend it in your blender together with 125 ml of low-fat milk and 125 ml pineapple juice (100% fruit juice, unsweetened). It's heavenly sweet and gives great energy too. <br /><br /><b>Snack #5: Banana And Oat Biscuits</b><br />1. Mash 2 ripe bananas until smooth. Add 1/3 cup unsweetened peanut butter, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 2 tablespoons low-fat milk, 2 tablespoons honey (only if you need to sweeten it, otherwise you can leave it), 2 ½ cups rolled oatmeal and ¼ cup flour and mix well. <br />2. Cover a baking tray with baking paper, place teaspoons of the dough on it and bake the biscuits for 10-15 minutes in the preheated oven at 350°C. <br /><br />All of these snack ideas have no sugar added. Their sweetness comes either from honey or the fruit sugar. Both of these do way less damage to your body as plain sugar would, so you don't have to feel bad at all enjoying these sweet snacks, even if you want to lose weight. And the great thing about using fruit as a sweetener is that you also get plenty of important vitamins. My inspiration for making this salad came after eating a very similar dish at a popular restaurant that I frequently visit. Actually, this is something my Wife and I like to do every once in a while. After we eat a dish that we are particularly fond of, we like to go home and try and re-create the recipe without knowing the ingredients. Try it... It's a fun way to see just how sensitive those taste buds really are.... <br /><br />FARMERS MARKET <br /><br />I am fortunate enough to have a wonderful farmers market not too far from my home. There is just something special about shopping for produce in a farmers market. The variety and quality of the produce found in my local farmers market is far superior to the boring old supermarket. I know I am getting as close to organic as possible when I shop there, so if you have one near you, I highly recommend you visit and see what they have to offer. Usually the folks there are very helpful and knowledgeable about their products so don't be afraid to ask questions. <br /><br />INGREDIENTS<br /><br />Here are the ingredients you will need to make this wonderful salad:<br /><br />- 1 Pound of Chicken Cutlets Grilled and Cut Into Strips - I like to use the thin sliced chicken as it cooks really fast and is easy to cut into strips. <br /><br />- Southwestern Spice Rub:<br /><br />2 tablespoons chili powder<br />2 tablespoons paprika<br />1 tablespoon garlic powder<br />1 tablespoon salt<br />2 teaspoons ground cumin<br />1 teaspoon cayenne pepper<br />1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes<br />1 teaspoon black pepper<br />1 teaspoon dried oregano <br /><br />- 8 Ounces of Mixed Salad Greens - I like to use a mix of Baby Romaine, Radicchio and Tango. If you can't find fresh greens, I recommend buying a bag of Fresh Express brand mixed salad greens. I have sampled a handful of salad brands and Fresh Express is by far the best in my opinion. The vegetable are always fresh, crisp and delicious. Everything is pre-washed and there are no preservatives. <br /><br />2 Ripe Avocados Cut Into Small Chunks - It is very important that you choose ripened avocados. When looking for ripe avocados, do not choose them based on color. The best way to determine if they are ripe is by the squeeze test. Ripe avocados will have a firm flesh but will give slightly when squeezed. Unripened avocados are hard and will not give. You should be able to tell the difference. It may take a bit of practice though. If you are unsure, ask for help. A ripe avocado should slice like butter. <br /><br />1 Large Green Bell Pepper Cut Into Squares<br /><br />2 Ears of Roasted Corn (Instructions Below) <br /><br />Half of a Red Onion Sliced<br /><br />A Healthy Bunch of Fresh Cilantro Chopped<br /><br />1/2 Cup of Shredded Cheddar Cheese<br /><br />Ranch Dressing<br /><br />DIRECTIONS<br /><br />Step 1 - Soak the Corn, husks and all, in cold water for 30 minutes. <br /><br />Step 2 - While corn is soaking, prepare the chicken cutlets. Lightly coat the chicken with olive oil and sprinkle some southwestern spice rub on both sides. Rub the spices into the chicken. Refrigerate and allow the chicken to marinate while the corn is soaking. <br /><br />Step 3 - After corn is done soaking, preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit. Place corn directly on oven rack and roast for approximately 30 minutes or until the corn is relatively soft. Remove from oven and let the corn cool. <br /><br />Step 4 - Preheat indoor or outdoor grill. Get the grill nice and hot. Grill chicken cutlets for about 2 minutes on each side, or until done. Remove from grill and allow to cool.<br /><br />Step 5 - While the chicken and corn is cooling, add the remaining ingredients into a large bowl. <br /><br />Step 6 - Remove corn from cob. Hold corn upright over a cutting board. Using a knife, gently cut the corn from the cob in a downward motion. Be careful!<br /><br />Step 7 - Slice the chicken into thin strips.<br /><br />Step 8 - Add the corn and chicken to the bowl with the rest of the ingredients.<br /><br />Step 9 - Add the ranch dressing and toss the salad. The amount of ranch dressing you add is really up to you. It depends on your personal preference. I like to add about 1/4 cup.<br /><br />Your done! An easy birthday cake to make and decorate is on the way.<br /><br />I prefer a two layer cake. To me they look more festive. If you have a cake mix great, if not make one from scratch. Pour mix into 2 - 9" round pans that have been greased and floured. Bake them at 350 degrees about 25 - 35 minutes. I can usually tell they are done by feel. If you can't put a knife in and see if it has any batter on it. If it does it isn't done yet. Try not to over bake it or it will be dry.<br /><br />When it is done put it on a cooling rack a few minutes. Run a knife around the edge of the cake. Then get a plate put the plate on top of the cake, flip it and your cake should come out if not put a wet towel on the bottom of the pan.<br /><br />Now place the cake in the freezer for about 2 hours. You can leave them upside down. A frozen cake will ice better.<br /><br />Make your favorite icing or buy it. Ice the top of one cake flip the other on it or place it on it. This is really an easy birthday cake. Now you want to ice the sides you can use a regular knife to just put icing on and run it around and ice the rest. Then do the top.<br /><br />Now you can decorate. Either put sprinkles all the way around to decorate or draw a circle in another color frosting fill it in and make a smiley face. Sprinkles is an easy birthday cake idea. After you have done that write Happy Birthday _ _ _ on it. You can use a different colored icing that you put in a tube or a clean empty catchup or honey bottle.
