Reviving Classic RecipesSubmitted by neillisa Sat, 6 Jun 2009
Parents are often faced with the problem of making new meals to keep kids interested. While everyone has a favorite dish, you can only serve them a number of ways before the kids start getting bored. How do you come up with new dishes every time?
Well, the answer is you don\'t have to. Sometimes, all you really need is a new take on classic dishes to create a whole new flavor. It doesn\'t have to be a drastic change-in fact, it\'s often the little tweaks that make the biggest difference. Here are some ways to revive old recipes and get your kids eating. Use a new ingredient. If you\'re out of one ingredient or simply want to try something new, take it as an opportunity to experiment. Replace one or two items on the list with something similar but more interesting. It\'s a great way to get your kids to try healthier foods, while keeping your options open for more recipe ideas. Look for vegetarian alternatives. Even if you\'re not vegetarian, it won\'t hurt to replace your meat dishes with the occasional vegetarian fare. Using more vegetables allows you to focus more on each ingredient\'s flavor rather than just the meat. Heavy vegetables like potato and rutabaga make great alternatives, and mushrooms and broth help add some of the meaty flavor. Bring out the crock pot. Many families are discovering the crock pot as a way to prepare faster, healthier meals. Take one of your favorite recipes and look for ways to adapt it to the slow cooking process. This works well for busy families, since all you do is turn it on in the morning and find it fully cooked by the time you come home. Let the kids help. Letting kids in the kitchen isn\'t always a good idea, but if well guided, it can turn out to be a fun activity. Start by taking them grocery shopping and letting them pick their own ingredients. Ask them how they\'d cook their favorite dishes and what they\'d like to throw in. It may not always turn out well, but you just might come up with something interesting together.
There\'s nothing wrong with reusing old recipes, especially if you find ways to make them more interesting. Here are four ideas you can try today. Get more information about classic recipes.
