Facts about wine tasting and vintage wineSubmitted by satyamrai Thu, 11 Jun 2009
Wine is an alcoholic beverage that is made from fermented grape and apple juice. Naturally grapes have the tendency to ferment without the addition of sugars, acids or enzymes to it. Wine is prepared by crushing different varieties of grapes and adding yeast to it so that the yeast consumes all the sugar contents of it and converts it into alcohol. A combination of different kinds of grapes and different types of yeasts yields a variety of tastes and flavor.
Other fruits can also be fermented into wine. Such as apples and berries etc., they are named as apple wine and elderberry wine respectively. They are all generically referred to as fruit wines or country wine. Barley wine and rice wine are made from starch-based materials and resembles more of beer and spirit than wine. Wine which is being enjoyed till now has a history dating back from the early 6000BC. Archeological evidences states that the earliest production of fermented grape juice dates back to 6000BC in Georgia and Iran. A 2003 report by archeologists', states that there are possibilities of China to have made fermented beverages using grapes and rice early in the 7000BC. Vintage wine is a type of wine which is prepared by using the grapes which are grown in a particular year and carries a label with the year of preparation on it. High quality Red Wines when stored properly can have great improvement on their taste. Vintage wine is generally bottled in one single batch as all of them taste the same. Climatic conditions also have a great impact on the taste of wines that the different wine bottles of the same batch from the same vineyard might carry a different taste. The sensory evaluation and examination of wine is known as wine tasting. Judging the color of the wine and smelling the aroma of it are the first steps involved in wine tasting. All wines are made up of organic chemical substances which are similar to the chemicals found in fruits and vegetables. Sweetness of the wine is determined by the residual amount of sugar in it after fermentation. This has to be in relation to the acidity in the wine. For example the residual amount of sugar is very low in the case of Dry Wine. Special people called Wine Tasters (people who have expertise in Wine Tasting) can be helpful to find a suitable kind of wine. A number of wine schools can be found these days which help the wine tasters to develop their skills in wine tasting.
