Preventing damage to the bottles is obviously important, but it's more than that when it comes to wine. It's about making sure that the flavor and the color stay as they are as well. Extreme temperatures can change both color and flavor of a wine. The older and more expensive the wine is, the more susceptible it is to these changes.

The ideal temperature for wine to be stored in is 55 degrees. The best way to transfer it is by car, as the climate can be controlled much more there than in a moving truck. Packing wine into styrofoam is recommended because it provides thorough protection of each wine bottle and insulation. A styrofoam box or inserts can be placed into cardboard box. Use at least two sheets of paper for each bottle, and tape the wrapping to make it more secure. Styrofoam, packing paper, or bubble wrap can be placed in between each bottle.
