Steven Spurrier : wine experts and tastersSubmitted by satyamrai Mon, 13 Jul 2009
Steven Spurrier is one of the best wine experts and tasters in the world. This Briton has a lot of credit to himself when it comes to wine. Spurrier started his schooling in a Rugby School, England and then further completed his studies in London School of Economics.
Spurrier took his first step into the field of wine trade in 1964 as a basic trainee with Christopher and Co., one of the oldest merchants in London. Later in 1970 Spurrier moved onto Paris and somehow convinced an old lady to sell her small wine store situated in a passageway near the ‘rue Royale' (a passageway in Paris). From the next year onwards he was successfully running the wine store ‘Les Caves de la Madeleine' in which he introduced a new way for selling wines. The customers were allowed to taste their wines before they had to buy them from the shop. This had earned Spurrier's wine shop good reputation and recognition. Two years hence, on 1973 Spurrier started a wine school ‘L'Academie du Vin', which was the first ever wine school in the whole of France. Then in 1976 Spurrier created the ‘Judgment of Paris wine tasting'. This very act had earned him enough fame all around the globe. Spurrier later became a wine consultant and a journalist after 1988 when he had come to the United Kingdom leaving behind his wine ideas in France. Currently Spurrier happens to be the director of ‘The Christie's Wine Course', which was founded by him in 1982 along with ‘Christine's Education'. He is also the wine consultant for Singapore Airlines and a consultant editor for ‘Decanter'. Steven Spurrier has written many books with the experience that he earned in the field of wine and wine tasting. A few of the popular books written by him are, The Academie Du Vin Concise Guide to French Country Wines (1984), How to Buy Fine Wines (1986), Academie Du Vin Wine Course (1991) with Michel Dovaz and Clarke & Spurrier's Fine Wine Guide (1998) with Oz Clarke. Steven Spurrier is also known for the awards he has won. He has won international awards like that of the Bunch Prize and the Le Prix de Champagne Lanson, both awarded for his articles published in the magazine Decanter. He has also received the Prix Louis Marinier and the Ritz Carlton Millennia Singapore Lifetime Achievement Award.
