Time for WineSubmitted by mjjames1 Fri, 9 Jan 2009
Wine offers a refreshing alternative to beer, the so called alcopops designed to taste like soft drinks, and to expensive cocktails.
Wine can be an intimidating subject, and for those starting out there are lots of different wines to try, from many different types of grapes and from countries all over the world. If you have found a wine that you like, you may be tempted to explore other wines either from the same region or country, of the same type of grape, or even just of the same colour. You might start to take more of an interest in wine, and enrol on a wine tasting course to quench your thirst for knowledge. Red Wines are available from all over the world, and include varieties such as Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabinet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Grenache. White wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Muscat are popular, and are also available from different countries. Rosé wines are made in several different ways, and vary in colour from a pale orange to almost purple. They have previously been considered “lesser” than red or white wines, but like wines in general, are proving increasingly popular. Some well known rosé wines have famous shaped bottles, which have added to their appeal. The neck of the bottle of one these brands apparently makes a good slide for bottleneck guitar! Sparkling wines have a significant amount of carbon dioxide in them, which makes them fizzy. This can be from natural fermentation, or from having carbon dioxide added. Sparkling wines can be very refreshing and good to drink in the summer. Whilst most European countries produce sparkling wines, America is emerging as a major player in this market. Most sparkling wines are white; however, Australia, Italy and Moldova also produce red sparkling wines. Champagne is probably the most well known wine, and is protected under international law, so that only wine made from grapes in the Champagne region of France can be called Champagne. Other countries have their equivalent of Champagne, such as Cava in Spain, Sekt in Germany, and Spumante in Italy. Champagne and similar sparkling wines are gaining in popularity as more people try them, and they are comparatively less expensive than they used to be. Different countries are renowned for producing different types of wines. France, Germany and Italy are the obvious European wine producing countries, but there are great wines from Eastern Europe, and even the UK! New world wines, from continents such as Australasia, Africa and both North and South America are proving to be every bit as good, and as popular as those wines from the more established countries. Now you know a bit more about wine, isn’t it time you found out which wines you like best?
