How Does Article Distribution Benefit An Article Directory Owner

Im sorry if this question sounds dumb, but I wanna know how article distribution can benefit an article directory owner sides from all the articles being submitted to your directory.

Art these contents not duplicated, won't new directories suffer for it in terms of ranking and all that?
