Dry skin has always been a problem in today's society and can cause a lot of discomfort and irritation. Unfortunately dry skin can happen quickly and easily, be it through environmental concerns such as dry air, a hereditary disposition to dry skin handed down from our parents, or the simple day to day action of washing with soap. So what treatment of dry skin can we implement once we have it? And what can we do to prevent it in the first place?

Unless you're pre-disposed to dry skin it can generally be prevented and treated in 3 simple steps:

Keep your skins moisture levels up

A common cause of dry skin is often dehydration. This can be cured by simply drinking lots of water or increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables. There are a lot of different recommendations for the amount of water you should consume each day, but in most cases it's around 1.5 Litres.

Reduce your intake of caffeine and alcohol

These both work towards dehydrating your body, and hence causing your skin to dry out. More often than not you'll find a big night out on the town resulting in uncomfortably dry skin. If you do decide to go out drinking, ensure you have a glass of water between each alcoholic drink. This will not only help prevent dry skin, but also reduce your chances of a nasty hangover the next day.

Use body care products such as moisturisers

Moisturisers help with the re-hydration of dry skin and can result in immediately softer skin. Another added benefit of moisturisers is that they can help skin restore and heal itself. This is particularly true with occlusive moisturisers as they create a barrier between your skin and the world and hence trap the moisture in. You should try to moisturise your skin at least once a day to help prevent and treat dryness.

If your dry skin is the result of a hereditary disposition you should consult a doctor for the best treatment. They'll generally prescribe one or more body care products depending on your condition.

Although dry skin is a common occurrence today, if you follow the 3 simple steps above you should not only be less affected by dry, irritating skin, but also experience a more healthy and moisturised skin as a result.
