That is the moment when both patient and doctor know that the effort was well worth it.

Healing through psychiatry can take a very long time. It is for this reason that a psychiatrist must have an abundance of patience because the process of healing someone's mind can be a long and arduous one. When a psychiatrist is in training he learns that the human mind is very fragile and can break into many pieces given the right provocation. The psychiatrist is taught through many years of study how to choose the right healing path for each individual patient as it's very important that the right treatment is chosen.

The road to becoming a psychiatrist is a long and rather difficult one by necessity. As a psychiatrist will be prescribing medication, he or she is also a medical doctor as well as a doctor of the mind. It is also interesting to note that most psychiatrists have their own therapists. This is necessary to keep them grounded as they are dealing with so much pain and inner turmoil on a daily basis.

Psychiatrists are not ever really off duty. They remain accessible to their more serious patients even when they are considered to be off the clock. It is often necessary for psychiatrists to set some limits for themselves so that they DO get some much needed downtime to recharge their own personal batteries. This is not an easy occupation and takes a lot of energy. When a therapist really cares about his or her patients, it can be very draining.

Competent psychiatrists are always in demand. Both regular hospitals as well as mental institutions are always looking for excellent psychiatrists to add to their staff. Going into private practice usually provides more pay, though, that's not the easiest thing to do when fresh out of medical school.

Being a psychiatrist means learning something new everyday. It also means dealing head on with some of the most unspeakable atrocities known to man, and many unknown. Helping someone who has been damaged by life is very hard. But when that person begins to show signs of a break through, there is nothing more rewarding at that moment.

It takes a very special personality to be able to handle the pressures of mental illness while also retaining the skill of caring professionally for a lot of people on an individual basis. There's a lot of pain to be faced every day and the psychiatrist shoulders all of that. This is one of the biggest reasons that a psychiatrist has a therapist as well. SOMEONE has to be keeping the psychiatrist steady.

Basically, if you have a deep and abiding caring for people in general and a lot of patience, you may want to consider psychiatry as a profession. Just know that it will take several years until you can practice independently because of all the needed training you receive. However, in the end, most licensed psychiatrists feel that it was all worth it to be in such a fulfilling career.
