Winter Skin CareSubmitted by clickforhowto Mon, 3 Aug 2009
Skin care survival guide. Cold winter air is far less humid than warm air, which means skin will be drier in the winter months. Harsh winds make conditions worse by causing moisture to evaporate more quickly from the skin. According to dermatologists, indoor conditions in the winter can be just as bad for complexion.
No matter how dark your skin, you still need to protect it from the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays. Choose a sunscreen with SPF of 15 or more. Sunscreens containing Titanium Dioxide tend to leave darker skin tones looking "ashy". A sunscreen gel is preferable and it absorbs invisibly into your skin. Although it may seem contradictory, dry skin benefits tremendously from exfoliation to help eliminate the flaking skin cells, to smooth the skin's surface and promote cell rejuvenation. Whether you choose to use a chemical exfoliant such as an AHA product like glycolic acid or a mechanical means such as a facial scrub, incorporating a means of exfoliation into your routine at least a few times a week can dramatically improve dry skin. Another thing to consider is your home heating system. As your furnace will be in constant use in the colder months, the air in your home can become extremely dry. If you do not have a humidifier built into your heating system, you should invest in a portable humidifier. The skin on your hands is thinner than on other areas of your body. Hands needs extra protection and winter skin care. Make sure that after washing your hands you dry them and use a good hand cream. Wearing gloves outdoors will also protect them and keep your skin soft. Preserve Your Skin's Moisture - Tips and Suggestions • Use warm water as opposed to hot for bathing or showering, and limit the time spent to 10 to 15 minutes a day. Use mild soaps which you dilute with water before applying to your skin. Excessive bathing, especially in hot water, and the use of strong soaps wash away the natural oils that are there to help keep water in the skin. • If you bathe rather than shower, use a little bath oil in the water. • During the cold weather, you might want to try using a thicker, richer moisturizer, two to three times per day, to help your skin to adequately replenish the moisture it loses. • Try to keep an anti-itch cream on hand to apply to excessively dry patches that occur despite taking the above suggestions, so that you can moisturize these tender areas to avoid scratching and prevent infection. Keep skin protected from outside elements like cold and wind by covering up your face and body well, and use lip protection regularly to avoid chapping. Even though it's cold, don't forget to use sunscreen; ultraviolet rays are still strong during the winter and glare from snow can also cause skin damage. There is a chemical exfoliant or skin peel, such as the AHA skin peel, which works by killing off the top most layer of skin, to give you a radiant complexion. There are numerous types of skin peels and according to doctors and plastic surgeons the TCA skin peel is the easiest to apply and, by far, the most effective and longest lasting.
