Alternative Options For Pain Relief

Submitted by markwalters

People can sometimes find themselves bothered by pain. This is nothing unusual. Pain is a common reaction to physical activities that stretch areas of the body beyond their physical limits. Sometimes, the pain can get in the way of getting things done, and in such cases, it is not entirely unreasonable for a person to take some time off or take medication to dull the sensation. However, most people associate pain relief with pills, and these pills tend to be potent painkillers that can have serious side effects. Also, people tend to forget that not all pain relief has to come in the form of a pill or capsule. There are painkiller medications on the market that come in other forms.

A lot of the time, if the patient has not been responsive to pain relief medications taken by mouth, then it could be that a change in treatment plan is in order. Sometimes, pain relief does not work because it is nerve pain, or caused by tendinitis. In such cases, medications taken by mouth are likely to be ineffective. Topical creams are significantly more effective for these situations, as they can work directly on the nerves in question. In some cases, the results can be seen within a half hour of application, with more appreciable results manifesting in about two weeks' time. There are also other benefits to be had by using topical creams to fight pain.

The first is that they are very effective in treating tension headaches, much more so than medications taken orally. In most cases, high doses of these medications do not cause any of the side effects typically associated with pain relief medication. These include nausea, drowsiness, and numbness. Creams and the like can also be obtained easily over-the-counter, unlike some of the more potent pain relief pills, which require a prescription. It should also be noted that some of these creams are also available in the form of a patch.
