Could Alligator Blood Beat MRSA?

Submitted by davefisher
Tue, 8 Apr 2008

The researchers have discovered that Alligators possess a "supercharged" immune system that is able to fight off a variety of bacteria, fungi and viruses without having been exposed previously.

The key to the creature's super-immune reactions are found in the alligator's blood where active protein's found in the white blood cells proved to have remarkable antibiotic properties. Tests found that these proteins killed a wide range of bacteria including Candida, MRSA and other powerful infections; previous research also indicates they may help to fight HIV.

The research has paved the way for the development of new antibacterial or antifungal drugs to treat a range of diseases and infections from skin creams to treat foot ulcers (commonly suffered by those with diabetes) to pills to treat MRSA.

The alligator blood findings are particularly interesting in the case of MRSA as the bacteria is resistant to conventional antibiotics, making it incredibly difficult to treat.

However, the research is still in its early stages and it could take up to ten years before these treatments are available for human use - in the meantime, the safety of such treatments needs to undergo rigorous testing.

We deal in a range of claims, including medical negligence and compensation. For further information, please visit http://www.1stclaims.co.uk.
