I must say, at first I was extremely skeptical about the self help hypnosis CDs my doctor recommended to help me quit smoking. I went into it with an open mind, however, and what I learned was quite amazing. Not only did those self hypnosis CDs help me give up cigarettes for good, but they also taught me a great deal about the art of suggestion.

Suggestions are the powerhouse of creativity. They are how you spell out your goals and instruct your subconscious mind to accomplish those goals. If a suggestion, be it good or bad, is repeated often enough and long enough, it will eventually be accepted by the subconscious mind as true.

If you've ever consulted a hypnotherapist, read any hypnosis self help books, or listened to self hypnosis CDs, you probably know that there are six elements of appropriate suggestion:

Be Present - Use "am" statements. Not "I will", but "I am." "I am a non smoker." "I am slim, trim, and healthy."

Be Positive - "I am healthy," not "I am not going to die from cancer." Notice what your mind focuses on in each statement.

Be Personal - "I" not "you" (unless you are making a recording of your suggestions, then use "you.")

Be Specific - The subconscious takes things literally, therefore the more specific the more easily they is accepted and initiated.

Make it Measurable - I am reducing my weight by two pounds per week. I am smoking fewer cigarettes each day.

Be Beneficent - Your positive, specific, measurable suggestions will be better absorbed by your subconscious if you mention your pleasure in accomplishing the goal. "I am enjoying reducing my weight by 2 pounds a week."

After making your suggestions, be still and let your subconscious do the rest. Remember, whatever you believe you can or cannot do, you're right.
