The Herbal Gold Mine Of The Amazon RainforestSubmitted by takeaction Thu, 15 Nov 2007
Deep in the Amazon Rainforest a life sustaining cycle of fresh rain nourishes pristine botanicals. With over 215,000 species of plants, the Amazon Rainforest is the most concentrated source of life energy on earth. Currently more than 200 pharmaceutical companies world-wide and some agencies of the U.S. government are sponsoring projects to study rainforest plants used by indigenous healers and shamans (spiritual leaders) for survival, health and well-being of their communities. Many researchers contend that rainforest plants represent a gold mine of beneficial nutrients, phytochemicals, and other ingredients that prevent disease, prolong and save lives. Suffering has been alleviated and lives saved by the plants that we do know, and we can anticipate the future of medicinal botany by contemplating the successes of the past. Our present knowledge of plant medicines represents a small portion of the natural resources that still awaits discovery.
Scientists have identified more than 2,000 tropical plants that contain substances for treating various types of cancer, and some say that total could go as high as 3,000 plants. One example is the rosy periwinkle, found in the rainforest of Madagascar Island, off of the southeast coast of Africa. Periwinkle's tiny pink flower is the source of two compounds; one for the treatment of childhood leukemia and another for the treatment of Hodgkin's disease. Madagascar's eastern forest, in fact, is said to be a "biotic treasure house." According to the World Health Organization, 80 percent of the global population depends primarily on traditional botanical cures, and medicine as practiced in the United States is an exception to the rule, but yet with all the great prescription drugs, the U.S. is a very sick country. Most of the largest pharmaceutical companies have turned away from flowering plants in the (mistaken) belief that synthetic chemistry could cure the world's medical afflictions. Plants have supplied humans with cures for their aliments, since the time of earliest human evolution. The impact of plant-derived medicine on human history has been remarkable. These medicinal plants and others (both known and yet to be discovered) are the foundation and the future of human medicine. The vast natural pharmacy of plant medicines once accounted for 80 percent of the substances used to cure disease, before we learned to synthesize medicinal compounds in the laboratory. Plants in their natural habitats have "learned," in an evolutionary sense, to produce a fantastic storehouse of complex chemicals that we can exploit. We can use these botanical medicines to curb and cure disease, a splendid coincidence for humankind. Imagine feeling better than you have ever felt before. Imagine feeling healthy, youthful, uplifted, relaxed and full of energy all the time. Now imagine doing all that naturally!
