Do you realize the dangers of prolonged use of laxatives? Are you tired of suffering from constipation? Are you sick of feeling bloated and having putrid flatulence? Would you like to end the pain and discomfort associated with constipation? Would you be willing to give up ten to fifteen minutes a day out of your life, if it would help you find a cure for constipation? What if this time would also make you more valuable as a friend, wife, and mother?

Grandmothers have been telling us to do this from time eternal. She probably didn't realize it would help cure constipation. No, this one is not fiber, prunes, fruit, juice, or even nuts. It is not drinking more water, or less dairy. It is also not exercising. All of these are important and will help find a cure for constipation. This one is easier. OK this is an exercise, but it won't ever make you sweat.

OK enough already! What is this magic obvious cure for irregularity? Chew your food.

With the busy lifestyle we live, we eat without ever hardly chewing our food at all. We don't have time to eat, so we eat quickly, because we have 300 other things competing for our time. Here is what happens when we do chew our food, and what happens when we do not.

What happens when we chew.

Digestion begins in the mouth. Saliva contains enzymes needed to begin breaking the food we eat down. These enzymes change the chemical composition of our food. Chewing, also physically changes the structure of the food. Take grain for instance. Not only does the saliva begin to change the grain into usable starch (sugar) so our body can absorb it, but the physical action of chewing mechanically breaks the fibers in the food. Saliva can't completely mix with the grain until it is ground up by your teeth.

When you chew, your brain sends signals to your stomach and intestines that food is on the way. These signals allow your body to produce what it needs for proper digestion of your food. By giving your system a head start, the food you eat is better absorbed and digested. This passes the food more effectively and efficiently through your body. The more nutrients absorbed from the food you eat, the less fat that is absorbed for later use.

The last sentence is worth repeating. The more nutrients that are absorbed from the food you eat, the less fat that is extracted and stored for later use. Women especially, when you eat quickly, your body doesn't absorb the nutrients it needs, but goes into a panic mode and stores every bit of fat it can get for later use.

Here is what happens when you don't chew your food completely.

Food will not break down properly in your stomach if saliva doesn't thoroughly saturate your food. The way digestion works is the acids in your stomach react with the enzymes in your saliva and break food down to be absorbed. Less saliva equals less digestion by the acids. Therefore, only the outside layer of the food is digested. Your small intestine can only absorb a small amount of the food, just the outside. The result, besides the fat being absorbed (which when left in the food, makes your stools soft), is pushed to the colon to rot.

This rotting food causes gas, bloating, and pressure. Since all of the fat was absorbed rather than included with the waste to help make it soft, when water is extracted from the colon, you are left with constipation.

Now what about making you a better person?

God gave you two ears and one mouth. By chewing your food completely, you get a chance to listen better. Your relationships will flourish when you realize what other people have to say while you are chewing.
