Meditation is a way of achieving complete relaxation in your mind and body so that you have a greater sense of calm and happiness. It means focusing on your inner self so that you gain more understanding about yourself as a person and your thoughts and emotions.

The calmness you can attain through meditation sessions will help you cope with all aspects of your life. Learning how to meditate is a process that requires work and concentration. When you first start you may be only able to manage a few minutes of focused meditation at a time, but this will increase with practice.

There are several different sitting positions you can choose to use as you learn how to meditate. There is no one best position. Most people use all of the positions in the beginning sessions until they find the one that is most comfortable for them.

The most important thing to remember about whatever sitting position you choose is that you must keep your back straight. While a typical meditating session is about 25 or 30 minutes, at first you may only be able to maintain the position for 10 minutes. That is perfectly Ok and you should not become discouraged at not being able to hold the position for longer.

The full lotus position for meditation is the most challenging one. You do not need to use this position when you first learn how to meditate. It is better to use easier positions so that you can gain the full benefit of meditation.

After that you can start learning new positions. Achieving true meditation is the goal, not sitting position. Many people who have been meditating for years never even try this position.

You may want to know how to meditate in a prone position. While you can meditate when lying down, just as easily as you can when seated, lying down to meditate is not recommended because it is so easy to fall asleep in this position. It is more difficult to remain alert, which is necessary when meditating.

When you first start meditating, if you find it difficult to keep your spine straight when sitting, you can sit against a wall, but this is not something you should keep doing. If you have problems with your joints that would cause you pain to sit cross-legged on the floor, you can use a chair and sit with your legs uncrossed.

Sitting on a cushion on the floor is the recommended position because the cushion keeps your hips higher and this helps relieve any tension in your knees. At the same time, the cushion should be firm, rather than soft.

Knowing how to meditate also means knowing where the best places for your meditation sessions are. It should be a place where there will not be people passing by. Choose a small room or corner that has plenty of ventilation and where the temperature is just right.

If it is too warm in the area where you are meditating, you will find it a lot harder to remain alert. You can also add candles or photos of your loved ones, but this would just be a decoration and not essential to the meditation. You can also choose an outdoor setting for your session of meditating – just have your cushion, a light sweater or jacket, and a timer.
