The origins of Ayurveda go back into the ancient past when medicine and philosophy were part of the same stream. Philosophical views have played a strong role in the Ayurvedic way of thinking. The term Ayurveda stands for science of life and longevity. This is considered to be the traditional system of medicine in India. It is a science that is thought off as a complete system that helps not only in the healing of the mind and body but in the person as a whole. It is difficult to point out the exact time when this science originated. Most of the texts found in India suggest that they were written between three to five thousand years ago. Some people also believe that it may have originated even earlier. The exact origins of Ayurveda are however lost in time. Legend has it that Ayurveda was taught by the creator of the universe, Brahma, to one of the lords of animals and it was then passed on to the divine twins known as Ashwini Kumars, who are believed to be heavenly healers. The information was then passed on to Indra, who was known as the chief of the shining ones. Wise men like Bharadvaja learned the knowledge of medicine from Indra when mankind started suffering from various ailments.
