The term spa can be used to describe a multitude of business from local hairdressers to plush 5 star hotels can all go by the name of a spa. So what is a spa anyway? And what different spas are available?

The original spas started thousands of years ago and consisted of people soaking themselves in hot springs, one such famous ancient spa is the Roman Baths in the city of Bath, England. Since this time though spas have changed considerably.

Spas can be split into a few categories, Day Spa, Resort Spa, Destination Spa and Medical Spa.

At a Day Spa you would drop in for treatments such as massages, facials and other body treatments which will usually last perhaps a couple of hours at the most. Often hair and nail treatments are offered which is why often day spas form part of hair or nail salons. Some day spas specialize in a certain area or operate a particular theme around which their treatments are based.

A Resort Spa is traditional located with in a hotel complex allowing guest to enjoy a spa treatment while they stay at the hotel, or in some cases you can still have a spa treatment even if you are not a hotel guest. Resort apas are considered a step up from a day apa as they often offer additional services such as a restaurant and fitness suite.

A Destination Spa offers the complete package. A destination spa will offer the widest choice of spa treatments as well as healthy meals, a fitness centre and a range of healthy facilities and treatments. Destination spas also provide accommodation to allow guests to stay for a spa break of complete relaxation and indulgence. In recent years the line between destination and resort spas has been merging with many resort spas now marketing themselves as a destination spa even though they are not a true destination spa.

A Medical Spa is a cross between a day spa and a medical clinic which usually run by a medical doctor. Medical spa tend to offer treatments for skin conditions such as broken capillaries, redness and brown spots or any other conditions not usually treated by an esthetician. Medical spas can also offer treatments such as laser hair removal, botox injections, skin peels, skin tightening and microdermabrasion. A medical spa will tend to look more like a health clinic rather than a traditional day spa and will have more a clinical atmosphere.

The great thing about having so many widely varying spas and spa treatments on offer is that there is something out there for everyone no matter what sort of treatment they require.
