Aloe Vera the wonder plantSubmitted by immunophilic Wed, 5 Dec 2007
Aloe Vera has been dubbed the Wonder Plant in the world of herbal medicines and has been used to relieve conditions like heartburn, asthma and arthritis. The most common use for Aloe Vera is perhaps in skin care. Many individuals have even planted Aloe Vera in pots for easy access to Aloe Vera for skin conditions such as itchy skin and sunburnt skin.
Very few people are allergic to Aloe Vera and hence this makes it one of the greatest Nature's gift. Aloe Vera has both antiseptic and antibiotic properties and hence this makes it effective to soothe the skin if there are skin irritations due to cuts, burns, eczema and sunburns. Aloe Vera can also speed up wound healing and minimizes wound scarring. Aloe Vera also has anti-inflammatory properties which reduces pain caused by wounds on the skin and hence soothes the skin. Aloe Vera also has excellent moisturizing properties due to its extremely high water content. This also makes it a good anti-aging agent if Aloe Vera gel is being applied onto the skin faithfully on a regular basis. In fact, Aloe Vera has 96 contains active ingredients such as amino acids, minerals, vitamins and enzymes. Do note that cosmetic and skin care products which have often tout themselves as having "active ingredients" can very often fetch a king's ransom. In this aspect, Aloe Vera serves as an excellent natural skin care source at a much cheaper price because the Aloe Vera plant costs very little to grow and maintain. Because of the low cost of growing and maintaining the Aloe Vera plant, growing your own Aloe Vera is very highly recommended. Although it can be convenient to purchase Aloe Vera gels from stores, the effectiveness of the Aloe Vera gel will not be as good as that from an Aloe Vera leaf which has been freshly cut and the gel extracted from the Aloe Vera leaf. If there is really a need to purchase Aloe Vera gel from the stores, be sure to read the labels and ensure that the product is 100% Aloe Vera gel. Aloe Vera can be juiced and consumed as a drink too. If Aloe Vera juice is preferred, ensure that a fresh Aloe Vera leaf is used as the active ingredients oxidize rapidly. The Aloe Vera gel can be extracted, cut into pieces and cooked with sugar for a refreshing and nutritious drink. About the Author
