Basal Cell Carcinom And Moh's Surgery

According to the specialists of cosmetic surgery rancho cucamonga, one of the most common types of skin cancer today is basal cell carcinom. Statistics shows that about 3 out of 10 Caucasians suffer from basal cell carcinoma. Though considered as malignant, it rarely kills or metastasizes. If it does, however, reach metastasis as a result of neglection, it has a high possibility of spreading and invading locally. About two-thirds of basal cell carcinomas occur on sun-exposed areas of the body. One-third occur on areas of the body that are not exposed to sunlight, emphasizing the genetic susceptibility of the basal cell cancer patients. Even though it's not deadly, professionals of the field have cited that it can be locally destructive and disfiguring.

One common and successful treatment used for basal cell carcinoma that cosmetic surgery rancho cucamonga specialists use is Moh's surgery. Moh's surgery, or sometimes known as Mohs micrographic surgery, involves outpatient procedure in which the specialists surgically excise the tumor and then immediately examine it under a microscope. Specialists have claimed that the use of Moh's surgery in basal cell carcinoma has the highest cure rate of about 97% to 99.8%. However, if it seems easy enough to cure, then why does the cure rate vary this much? Why can't it be at 100% if it is so effective?

Misreading of the pathology slide is one factor that affects the effectiveness of Moh's surgery. According to surgeons from cosmetic surgery rancho cucamonga, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between a small island of basal cell carcinoma and a hair follicle structure. Many Mohs surgeon limit their tissue processing to include only 2 sections of tissue. This severely hampers their ability to determine if a structure is a hair follicle or a carcinoma. Two histologic sections can not fully distinguish these two nearly identical structures, and can lead to either "false negative" or "false positive" errors by either calling a section clear of tumor, or calling a section positive for tumor, respectively. A common solution used by surgeons for this is by serial sectioning of the tumor.

Surgeons who perform serial sectioning through the block of tissue (usually 100 micrometres apart) are assured of the contiguous nature of the tumor, the distance of the tumor from the surgical margin, and stage of the tumor. Serial sectioning also makes it easier to work with three dimensional tumors that have difficult to compress margins.

Basal cell cancer is the most common skin cancer. It is much more common in fair-skinned individuals with a family history of basal cell cancer and increases in incidence closer to the equator or at higher altitude. According to Skin Cancer Foundation, there are approximately 800,000 new cases yearly in the United States alone. Up to 30% of caucasians develop basal cell carcinomas in their life time.
