Cradle Cap : Not A Serious Condition, Requires Simple Care

Submitted by addamdevin

Cradle capappears as crusty, flaky scales, usually over the scalp of the baby. This skin condition is usually seen in infants after two months of age, and it can go up to two years of age. Although the exact medical causes are not known, many experts say that it could be caused due to overactive sebaceous glands in the new-born baby. Some other experts attribute this condition to weak digestive system in the new-born, which may render it unable to absorb the essential B-complex vitamins which help to upkeep good healthy skin.

Cradle cap is surely not due to poor hygiene or allergies. And it is not contagious either. And since it is generally not itchy, the baby may not be bothered much by it, but the only problem is their unsightly appearance. Itching might occur but only in severe cases. This condition is usually seen on the scalp. It can, however, spread onto the face, neck and down to the arms. In such a case, pediatricians refer to it as seborrheic dermatitis. This skin condition is more akin to eczema, although not exactly eczema, which is a very common problem in infants.

There are many remedies suggested to deal with cradle cap, however the most important ones among them is the use of mild medicated shampoos. And you can treat your baby yourself. It is no serious condition, but it is all about taking proper care of your baby. As you shampoo frequently, the scales tend to soften and the same can be brushed away gently with a soft comb or a soft brush.

However, in case, the rash spreads to the face and the cradle cap condition does not really improve with mild shampoos, it is a better to consult a dermatologist such that he might suggest a cortisone cream or lotion as appropriate.
