Dry Delicate Clothing

The care labels for some clothes specify that they should be washed by hand. But if you occasionally hand wash the clothes that you normally wash in the machine, you will help to prolong their life.

On a recent visit to Harrods, I noticed they also have a special place for afternoon tea. As you would expect, it is especially genteel!

When you drop your clothing off at the dry cleaners, it does through a number of stages. First off, the clothing will be tagged and inspected. This is a time where labels or tags are attached to clothing so its not lost. It is during this stage that clothing is examined for unfinished hems, missing buttons, rips, etc. This way, the cleaners know what they need to clean and what was there before the cleaning (i.e. so theyre not blamed for it when the clothing is returned).

If your clothing comes out marked up, the support parts for the dryer drum might be worn out, thus, throwing the drum off-balances and getting your clothes pinched in between parts of the dryer. Check the glides, rollers, wheels, and seals for wear. Replace the whole set of glides, rollers, or wheels if one or more are bad. You will also want to check the rear support for any play in it. Sometimes the rear drum bearing gets worn out.

Some items that you are taking to the Dry Cleaners might also be able to be laundered at home. Contrary to popular belief, some sweaters (even cashmere) can be washed at home! Look at the item's care label for cleaning instructions. If it says "dry clean only" then do just that, however if it says "dry clean" then you may be able to launder it at home.

What's that you say? "Fine time to tell us about this now that the whole world is covered with snow!" "Nay," say I! This is the perfect time. Winter is for planning. If I'd have told you about this in May or June, you'd have been so busy it would never have managed to be squeezed in. Isn't this the time for resolutions? So make one that says: "This is the last winter I'll spend with no summertime flowers in the house!"

You can buy either a gas dryer or an electrical dryer. Dryers that are electric are cheaper, usually. However, they are higher in cost to run. However, gas dryers more efficient to operate, in the long run, cost about $50 more than an electric dryer.

Finally, most drugstores and pharmacies sell Glycerin, USP, in pint bottles at (more-or-less) reasonable prices. I'd stay away from the tiny 2-ounce bottles packaged for small-quantity customers at chain or supermarket drug stores. They are way over-priced. Ask your local pharmacist for the pint size.
