Facial ExerciseSubmitted by goodevening Fri, 10 Jul 2009
The medical community concurs with Cynthia Rowland, facial exercises are an appropriate modality for treatment of many orofacial dysfunctions. Chances are almost every family will deal with either a stroke or other catastrophic muscle debilitating illness, trauma or injury - usually, this produces an inability to adequately formulate and articulate words and phrases. Most likely, these patients will require certain retraining from a speech pathologist or an orofacial myologist to strengthen the lips, tongue and facial muscles.
One day as this mother, wife, lover of life, walked past a mirror, she caught a glimpse of herself and wondered, "Who is that ‘old woman"?" After this rude jolt, she realized that her former beauty had begun to fade. Aging faces are primarily a result of sagging muscles; just like in the body where we discover our hips sliding down the back of our legs or the muscles in our upper arm looking loose and jiggle-ly, facial muscles suffer the very same loss of tone and resiliency. Add sun damage to the mix and all of a sudden you have an old, tired face that needs attention. Clients/patients of every ethnic group use injections more frequently and with financing programs offered by clinics, spas and physicians, more middle income people are enticed by these lenient payment plans. The above options cannot compete with exercise. Oh sure, the advertising agencies stake their reputations on brainwashing the consumer to make them believe that one can only look younger and prettier by enlisting the aid of a plastic surgeon who is willing to cut into perfectly healthy tissue in hopes that you will like the results. If you have experienced age discrimination, it's all about the face because no one looks at your knees and tells you you're too old, you may want to consider making simple lifestyle changes now before one or two incidents escalate into a serious matter. Much to my relief, my hunch paid off. A very short time proved facial muscles to be every bit as responsive to resistance training as the rest of the body. My face was still thin, but with the extra lift and firmness, I went from gaunt to a healthier more athletic look. That's when it became perfectly clear why mainstream facial exercise never got off the ground ... we simply weren't taking it far enough. For long-term beauty it is evident that facial exercise is superior to cuts, sutures and injections. Faces that forego these costly invasive procedures and opt instead for natural beauty through exercise will never look hard, done or over done. You can prove this to yourself by placing a mirror flat on the table while bending over from the waist looking down into the mirror. Gaze at yourself for ten seconds to see just how dramatically soft your facial muscles are. I warn you, it is a scary look that alerts you that your facial features are losing their contour because the muscles that support the skin are no longer in great shape. This atrophy causes the look of old.
