Hair Removal By Use Of Lasers

Submitted by SterreLauridsen

The use of lasers has been one of the many indispensable tools used by medical practitioners. Lasers can be used for bloodless surgery, laser healing, surgical treatment, kidney stone treatment, eye treatment, dental procedures such as laser teeth whitening, and in cosmetic surgery. One popular use of lasers in cosmetic surgery is its effectiveness in removing unwanted hair. Laser hair removal fall under the process of epilation, which is the process of removing the entire hair, including the part below the skin, and is therefore longer-lasting.

Before the use of Laser in Hair Removal

Before the use of lasers was introduced as a method for epilation, the use of electrolysis was the first known process of permanently removing hairs. This is done by sliding a solid hair-thin metal probe along each hair follicle. Proper insertion does not puncture the skin. Electricity is then delivered to the follicle through the probe, which causes localized damage to the areas that generate hairs, either through the formation of caustic lye (galvanic method), overheating (thermolysis method), or both (blend method).

This method proved to be very effective in terms of providing a longer-lasting hair removal, the only drawback is the time the patients have to spend for the actual process to take effect. Most practitioners will advise that complete removal of facial hair takes between 1 and 4 years, with an average treatment length of 2 years. This is where lasers proved their effectiveness as compared to the use of electrolysis.

Laser Hair Removal

According to laser hair removal rancho cucamonga centers, epilation by laser was performed experimentally for about 20 years before it became commercially available in the mid 1990s. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) epilators, though technically not a laser, use xenon flash lamps that emit full spectrum light. Laser and light-based methods, sometimes called phototricholysis or photoepilation, are now most commonly referred to collectively as "laser hair removal".

The efficacy of laser hair removal is now generally accepted in the dermatology community, and laser hair removal is widely practiced by many laser hair removal rancho cucamonga centers. Many reviews of laser hair removal methods, safety, and efficacy have been published in the dermatology literature.

Unlike electrolysis, laser hair removal may take as long as 5-7 sessions. However, it has been shown in practice that as many as 12 sessions, depending on the type of hair and skin color, provide long-term reduction of hair. Current parameters done by different laser hair removal rancho cucamonga centers suggest a series of treatments spaced at 4-6 weeks apart for most areas, although the timing of treatments has not
been standardized.
