Indepth Look at Dermatology

Internal medicine is concerned with systemic diseases of adults, i.e. those diseases that affect the body as a whole, or with all adult non-operative somatic medicine, thus excluding pediatrics, surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, and psychiatry. Practitioners of such specialties are referred to as physicians. Practitioners of internal medicine however are called differently based on their subdisciplines. A popular subdiscipline is Dermatology and the doctors who specialize in this field are called dermatologists.
Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin and its diseases. This particular discipline has both medical and surgical aspects. Subspecialties of dermatology involve cosmetic dermatology, dermotopathology, immunodermatology, Mohs Surgery, pediatric dermatology, and teledermatology. A more detailed list of the practices connected to these subspecialties is found in glendora dermatology.
Among the subspecialties of dermatology, it is in the field of cosmetic surgery that dermatologists have been recognized as leaders. In fact, a lot of dermatologists in this field complete fellowships in surgical dermatology. Many are trained during their residency in the use of botox, fillers, and laser surgery. Some dermatologists even perform minor cosmetic procedures including liposuction, blepharoplasty, and face lifts. This is due to the fact that many cosmetic fellowships are offered in both surgery and laser medicine despite not having any formal guidelines from the American Board of Dermatology. There are those, however, that still limit their cosmetic practice to minimally invasive procedures. These are all found in glendora dermatology sites.
Dermatopathology, another dermatology subspecialty, involves doctors that specializes in the health problems of the skin. This field is shared by both dermatologists and pathologists. The usual dermatologist will complete 1 year of dermatopathology fellowship. This usually include 6 months of general pathology, and 6 months of dermatopathology. A similar fellowship can be completed by a pathologist. Acquiring both of the two specialties can qualify a doctor as a dermatopathologist. It is not exactly that difficult because upon completion of a standard residency in dermatology, many dermatologists are already competent in dermatopathology. Basically, would-be dermatopathologists qualify to sit for their examination by completing both a dermatology and a pathology residency.
Immunodermatology, on the other hand, specializes in the treatment of immune mediated skin diseases such as lupus, bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris, and other skin disorders. Specialists in this field often run their own immunopathology labs.
Mohs Surgery involves both pathology and surgery. Dermatologists who specialize in this area receive extensive training in both pathology and surgery during their residency. Doctors who perform Mohs surgery can receive training in this specialized technique during their dermatology residency, but many will seek additional training either through preceptorships to join the American Society for Mohs Surgery or through formal one to two-year Mohs surgery fellowship training programs administered by the American College of Mohs Surgery. Once again, more information about cosmetic dermatology and all practices involved in it are available in glendora dermatology centers.
Teledermatology, another subspecialty, involves using telecommunication technologies to exchange medical information using all kinds of media. This subspecialty deals with option to view skin conditions over a large distance in order to provide knowledge exchange and to establish second opinion services for experts during follow-ups of individuals with chronic skin conditions.
