It seems like the simplest of tasks, but why do so many homeowners have trouble keeping their homes in order? From the occasional stray sock to dirt and grime in the bath, it all just seems to add up. Well, there\'s no real science behind home maintenance-it\'s all just a matter of habit and discipline. If you make it part of your routine to stay clean and organized, you shouldn\'t have any trouble keeping your home in shape.

Storage is a good way to start. A lot of the clutter around the house comes from things that aren\'t in their proper places. Think about it: you leave your coat on the table, figuring you\'ll just put it back on the rack later (which seldom happens). Before you know it, someone else does the same, and there\'s a big pile you don\'t know what to do with. If you put the rack where it\'s most accessible, there\'s no reason to delay putting it back.

It\'s also useful to get rid of unwanted stuff once in a while. Every few weeks, go through your storage and see if there\'s anything you can do away with. In your wardrobe, for example, clothes that you haven\'t worn in a while may be better off somewhere else. Try having a garage sale-it\'s a nice way to clear out your closet while also making some extra money.

You may also want to rethink your home\'s layout. Sometimes, people leave a mess behind because the space is not conducive to cleanup. Is there a trash bin close to your work table? Is the room illuminated well enough to see where the dirt is? Make it so that you instinctively put things back in place after using them, and make sure you don\'t have to walk all the way across the room to do it.

If you cook most of your meals at home, you\'ll also have to pay special attention to the kitchen. As the busiest part of the house, kitchens are often the main source of mess and clutter, not to mention dirt. Get into the habit of cleaning up after every kitchen chore, no matter how small. That way, it\'ll all come naturally-you\'ll get so used to having a clean kitchen that you can\'t stand having it otherwise.
