Lip Augmentation

Submitted by hgriffiths

Lip augmentation is a treatment using synthetic materials or surgical re-shaping to enhance the lips. Lip augmentation helps to create plump and full-looking lips, and can also reduce fine wrinkles occurring around the mouth. Lip augmentation is a fairly new procedure, but has recently become is a common and successful form of cosmetic surgery for those who feel they have with thinner lips or fine lines around the mouth.

Lip augmentation falls into two basic categories: surgical (implants) and non-surgical (injectables such as collagen and Restylane).

Injectable fillers are only temporary, with collagen (the industry leader) lasting between 3 and 6 months. However, the results are often more natural, with a fuller, ‘poutier' lip.

Implants typically last much longer than injectable fillers. A synthetic implant will be inserted via small incisions usually made at the corner of the lips. Results for lip augmentation procedures are shown immediately, but swelling will take 1-3 weeks to fade and show the true results of the procedure. Implants such as silicone, Artecoll, and Aquamid give results which are long lasting yet are more invasive than a regular injection of collagen.

As with all surgical procedures, lip augmentation is not without risks; however, the risks associated with lip augmentation are minimal. Although swelling and bruising is common, these fade within a week. Other risks can include scarring, cold sores, infection and temporary loss of sensation in the lips. It is important to choose the right filler for you, and Blemish selects its materials to ensure that they meet the customer's needs.

Lip augmentation is rapidly becoming one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available due to the speedy operation and recovery time, and rapid results. 8700 lip augmentation procedures were performed in the USA in 2007, according to statistics provided by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. This increase in popularity could also be down to the rising numbers of Hollywood actresses are also opting for the procedure. Celebrities such as Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears have tried Restylane fillers, which offer a temporary fullness to the lips.
