Permanent Hair Removal Practices

Submitted by SterreLauridsen
Thu, 14 May 2009

In todays practice of general dermatology, hair removal has become a huge trend. In contrast to the conventional practice of hair removal by shaving and plucking, newer methods of hair removal are now being offered that promise a more permanent removal of unwanted hairs. Some of these new methods are listed below.

Electrolysis (electrology)

Laser

Intense Pulsed Light
Electrology

Electrology is the practice of electrical depilation to permanently remove human hair. The actual process of removing the hair is referred to as electrolysis. The practitioner slides a solid hair-thin metal probe into each hair follicle. Proper insertion does not puncture the skin. Electricity is delivered to the follicle through the probe, which causes localized damage to the areas that generate hairs, either through the formation of caustic lye (galvanic method), overheating (thermolysis method), or both (blend method). Most practitioners will advise that complete removal of facial hair takes between 1 and 4 years, with an average treatment length of 2 years.
Electrolysis as a method faced new competition in the 1990s after laser hair removal was developed and promoted as a quicker and easier way to remove hair permanently by many professionals of the field, including a large number of laser hair removal rancho cucamonga specialists. However, electrolysis regained lost popularity after the Food and Drug Administration declared laser and similar devices can only claim to reduce hair growth, not permanently remove it.

Laser

According to the specialists of laser hair removal rancho cucamonga, epilation or hair removal by laser was performed experimentally for about 20 years before it became commercially available in the mid 1990s. The efficacy of laser hair removal is now generally accepted in the dermatology community, and laser hair removal is widely practiced. Many reviews of laser hair removal methods, safety, and efficacy have been published in the dermatology literature. The number of sessions required in a laser hair removal treatment usually takes about 5 to 7 sessions, but it can also take as much as 12 sessions depending on the type of hair and skin color.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

The Intense Pulsed Light hair removal process has become very popular due to its more attractive cost and faster treatment time compared to laser hair removal. The comparison of effectiveness between Intense Pulsed Light and Laser Epilation is debated by scientists, laser hair removal rancho cucamonga specialists, equipment manufacturers and practitioners, but results are generally accepted to be roughly equivalent. IPL is also used for the treatment of the skin in a process known as photorejuvenation. IPL's work more directly on the top layers of the skin and do not penetrate deep enough to damage hair germ cells eliminating potential damage to the epidermis.
