Tips To Prevent Chapped Lips

Submitted by naturalremedies

A chapped lip is a condition whereby the lips become dry and possibly cracked. Chapped lips can be painful, embarrassing, and uncomfortable. Chapped lips are most often caused by being in overly windy, sunny, or dry conditions. Chapped lips can have several causes, including dry weather, overexposure to the sun, lip biting and sucking, riboflavin (vitamin B-2) deficiencies and ill-fitting dentures. Most people get chapped lips from time to time. Dry, cracked or sore lips can interfere with many daily activities, such as smiling, kissing, eating and talking. Signs and Symptoms of Chapped Lips is dryness, redness, tenderness and sensitivity, cracking, splitting, or peeling and pain. A variety of topical nonprescription products are available for treating or preventing chapped lips.

Lips that are rough, dry and cracked obviously need moisture. Most often, we sometimes lick it to provide moisture but medical experts say you could be making the condition worst, as saliva can make an environment suitable for bacterial or fungal infections, which could lead to angular cheilitis.

If you already have dry, flaky skin on your lips, the most convenient method will take place right after brushing your teeth or cleansing your skin. Since the skin on your lips is moist after either of these activities, all you have to do is take a soft washcloth or toothbrush and gently massage it across the lips. I know you're anxious about removing that pesky flaky skin, but the process should not involve bleeding or breaking the skin. This is a personal favorite of mine, and I use it whenever I experience dry skin also! I can apply lipstick smoothly onto my lips without any problems.

Here are some chapped lips treatment tips to try from home:

1.#Avoid licking the lips as saliva evaporates quickly resulting in them being drier than before

2.#Take quality nutritional supplements if your body lacks nutrients such as vitamin B1, vitamin B12 and iron

3.#Apply coconut / olive oil or shea butter frequently on your lips

4.#Use moisturizing lipstick i.e. one that can help to retain the moisture within

5.#If you do not have moisturizing lipstick, use a protective lip balm for temporary relief.

6.#Do not get too much exposure to the sun. Again, the sun can cause your lips to dry so you might as well avoid too much exposure to the sun and avoid being sunburned. Choose a lip balm with sunscreen to protect your lips.

7.#Sensitive to toothpaste. Toothpaste (this also applies to mouthwash, chewing gum and candy) contains chemical such as flavoring agents that can cause chapped lips to those who are allergic or sensitive to them.

8.#Avoid using any lip balms with phenol, lanolin, parabens and anything with a fragrance. No botanicals either. People can be allergic to many ingredients- even those from plants.

9.#Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to keep your body as well as your lips hydrated.

10.#Consult a doctor. If you think you have severe cracking of the lips, and any of the home remedies does not seem to help, consulting a doctor is your best move to deal with the condition. There are medications and ointment used to cure chapped lips but always consult your doctor before buying these medications. Do not experiment.
