The phrase "hyaluronic acid" sounds scary; even the thought of having it injected into one's skin might be alarming. But when it's called by another name - Restylane, or Juvéderm - Hyaluronic acid suddenly doesn't seem so scary after all.
And it shouldn't. Hyaluronic acid is a connective molecule naturally produced in the human body, where it forms an important part of our extracellular matrix - the body's basic "filler" material that holds our insides in place. It's also found in our eyeballs, our joints - anywhere smoothness and softness is needed. For this reason it (under the name Hyaluronan) is a common ingredient in skin care products.
In 2003 the FDA approved Restylane as an injection-based therapy for temporarily smoothing out wrinkles by adding volume under the skin. Juvéderm is non-animal-sourced Hyaluronic acid filler, similar to Restylane, and it does the same thing - only better.
Juverdem is a gel made from hyaluronic adic used to soften and fill deep folds, creases, and cracks in the facial skin of those seeking an enhanced appearance. It is widely used by cosmetic, dermatological and plastic surgeons to soften the deep folds in the face and reduce wrinkles. It is the only hyaluronic acid filler approved by the FDA.
Cracking and creasing of the facial skin is generally caused by problems related to loss of volume and repeated motion rather than by emotional issues. Juvéderm injections are made into the layers underneath the skin to restore the skin's volume and remove creases such as the "smile lines," creases of skin which run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Small, indistinct, or irregular lips can also be brought to a pleasing size and degree of fullness using Juvéderm, and the therapeutic effect can last six months or longer.
No form of medical treatment is free of the risk of serious side effects, and Juvéderm is no different. The side effects are common and can include redness, pain, and swelling around the injection areas. In extremely rare circumstances, facial lumps (granulomas) can appear, meaning that those with severe allergies or life-threatening hypersensitivities should avoid Juvéderm.
Recovery is generally quick. Excessive exposure to sunlight and heat should be avoided, as should strenuous activities, makeup and alcoholic beverages. Swelling of the skin around the injection site can be reduced by the application of a cold compress such as an ice pack.
Juvéderm is a safe and effective natural product when used as directed. Prospective patients should always consult with a licensed medical practitioner before making a decision on the use of Juvéderm or any type of facial rejuvenation.

Juvéderm treatment, when administered by a licensed medical professional, can be an effective medical means of improving the appearance of facial skin that has been damaged by aging, exposure or other factors. For up-to-date information on cosmetic procedures, visit The Plastic Surgery Channel .
