Can Fibrous Food Help Reduce Cholesterol?

Submitted by swarajart

Health experts are constantly looking for newer and safer ways to bring down high cholesterol levels. Amidst various other cholesterol lowering substances, consumption of fiber is being considered as an important way to lower cholesterol. Including cholesterol in your daily diet can help reduce your cholesterol level to a great extent.

Fiber works in several ways to lower your cholesterol levels. As you consume significant amounts of the substance, the cholesterol present in the intestines will cling to the fiber and eventually get eliminated from the body through the excretion process.

One more way in which fiber can help lower cholesterol levels is by forcing the liver to use more of cholesterol. with getting shot of cholesterol from the body, fiber also provides help in removal of bile salts from the body. To compensate for the bile salts that have been removed from the body, the liver is forced to produce more bile. For this, it needs more cholesterol. Thus, fiber forces the liver to use more cholesterol and decreases the general cholesterol levels in the body.

With this, it is clear that a fiber rich diet can help in reducing the overall cholesterol levels in the body. However, not all fiber works rather well to bring down the cholesterol in the body. Fiber can be broadly classified into soluble fiber and insoluble fiber.

Of the two, it's the soluble form of fiber, which is most effective in the cholesterol reduction process. Some excellent sources of soluble fiber include oat bran, legumes, nuts, flaxseed, broccoli, sweet potatoes, onions etc.

On the other hand, insoluble fiber is basically a waste mover of the body. It does not have any 'direct' result on the cholesterol levels of your body. Assorted vegetables and fruit, oats, wheat products and whole grain are among the sources of insoluble fibers for human body.

if you want to lower your cholesterol level, you'll have to include a large amount of fiber into your daily diet. However, if it's's difficult for you to do so, you may need to follow the given tips as a solution.

*Eat fruit and vegetables without peeling their skin.
*Increase your grain consumption as much as you can. Whole grain pasta, bread and such like are among the best options.
*Legumes and beans in particular are fantastic source of soluble fiber. Make nice homemade soups out of these foods and you could well enjoy your healthy cholesterol-reducing break.
*Put together a sandwich with tons of cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, sprouts and the like. Or, you can toss these ingredients to make a similarly delicious salad. Add a touch of vinegar to it for reinforced taste.
*Give yourself a nice serving of oatmeal for breakfast.
*Instead of drinking fruit juices, eat fresh fruits.

So if you're looking to scale back your cholesterol level, look no further. Fiber will help you bring your cholesterol levels down significantly and make a contribution to your overall health and life.
