The poison ivy plant is one of the most frequent problems that parents have to be cautious of and spend lots of time making sure that their kids know how they can distinguish it. But even this sometimes is not sufficient to keep them away from it. Every year it seems that our kids find themselves all over it and before we realize it they have developed a terrible rash.

When this takes place numerous of us don the rubber gloves and keep the kids who have not been infected far away from them. It is better if we only have one child to care for then two or even three. But is this truly required? Is the poison ivy rash infectious.

Numerous of us would say that it is because most of the popular rashes are. What people do not understand is that it is only contagious when the skin or any item that has touched the plant has bits of urushiol on it and it touches someone else's skin.

Urushiol oil is the liquid that is held within the poison ivy plant. It flows through the whole plant - but can only be discovered when a part of the plant has been broken open. Still, though it may not be observed on the leaves of the plant it can be transmitted to people when they touch them.

Contrasting to common belief the liquid that is given off from the poison ivy blisters that have burst open cannot cause somebody to break out into skin rashes and blisters.

Although poison ivy is not contagious it is easier to immediately clean the infected child as well as the clothes that they had on at the time. This will ensure that all of the urushiol oil has been removed and cannot come into contact with anyone else.
