Asbestos Found After Apartment Fire

Submitted by justice
Tue, 3 Mar 2009

Asbestos was reportedly found following an apartment fire in Boulder, CO, last week.

Residents of the apartment complex are being cautioned to stay away from the building until the asbestos is completely removed.

For many, this means going without their personal belongings for possibly weeks.

Asbestos Cancer Tests Conducted at Complex

Air samples have reportedly been taken from the units affected by the fire and according to reports, the air tested positive for asbestos.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen that was commonly used in the construction of buildings throughout the U.S. until the 1970’s when it was banned due to its risks.

Asbestos Clean Up Needed

Asbestos clean up crews are supposedly being brought into the apartments to remove the asbestos and run more tests on the building.

“The clean-up is expected to take at least a week. The building is considered unfit to live in,” says Dave Lowrey, the Fire Marshall in Boulder.

Some Residents Forced to Move due to Asbestos Problems

Residents of the buildings were told they could return to gather their things after the fire occurred.

Though after testing was conducted, health officials are forbidding anyone near the site until the asbestos is gone.

“I will be looking for another place,” states Jamie Smith, who lived at in one of the apartments thought to be at asbestos risk.
