Look at those Smokey eyes

Submitted by rachel.broune

Smokey eyes can be used at any time, just depends on your personal style. however, they are typically used in the evening for a reason. Try a little lighter right on your lids, dark in the crease and then fade, makes your eyes look more open. To really give you the smokey look, smudge eyeliner, or use the dark shawdow as liner, above and below the eye.

You can create the smoky eye effect using black, grays, browns and plums/purples. You can use just brown, or just plum or just black or you can blend a combination of all three if you like. Using black happens to look too harsh on me so I do it using chocolate browns and plums. But you should try experimenting with different colors and combinations, and you will get the hang of it.

Apply eyeliner. If you're going for a typical black, brown or gray smoky eye, apply liner in one of those colors above the upper lash line, drawing line thicker in the middle of eye. If your opting for a jewel-toned eye (violet makes a gorgeous smoky eye), line eyes with a purple, blue or deep green liner.

Try a neutral base all over top eye socket, then an olive green over the top extending just above the crease and just a little past the outer end of your eye. Then use a dusky brown blending into the olive on the outer corners of your eye. Then last dab a smokey grey on the inner corners of your eyes to open them up.
For night time, add a little brown eye liner.

Brush away any shadow that has fallen below the eye with a fluffy brush and clean up any areas that have smeared with a q-tip.

Blend in color on bottom lashes For color on the bottom (a key smokey eye look) you'll want a lighter eyeliner & the key is to 'smudge it'. You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect.

Use a pencil eyeliner in charcoal (black would make your eyes look smaller) line the top and the bottom (right under lashes) bring it out just a tiny bit on the sides. Smudge the eyeliner with a q-tip or makeup sponge. Then, add a gray eyeshadow to make it soft.

Blend in darker color, but keep dark color below the crease. Now that you have the base & eyeliner on, it's time to get the smoky effect. You need a darker eyeshadow shade. Using an eyeshadow brush blend in color starting at your lash line & blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop deep color at crease.

Smokey eyes look nice on everyone as long as its done nicely. Apply a dark eye pencil or eye shadow on the lower part of the upper lid near the lashes. Spread it evenly. Use either metallic grey or black with shimmer on top. apply a lighter colour in the middle of the eye and frosty white or silver under the brow line. Apply black liquid eye liner on the upper lash line and pencil liner on the lower lash line. Finish with mascara on both upper and lower lashes.

Want a more dramatic look add more Shadow and Mascara! If you are looking for the most dramatic effect be sure to curl those lashes and apply 2-3 coats of black mascara.
