New Reports Show Risky Nanotechnology

Submitted by justice
Fri, 27 Feb 2009

According to researchers, consumers should be just as concerned about the nanotechnology they are around and use on a daily basis as they are about lead in their mascara and mercury in their fish.

A recent report from the Environmental Working Group claims that hundreds of products currently on the market contain nanoscale materials that have yet to be studied.

Nature Nanotechnology Study of Asbestos

Nature Nanotechnology conducted a study that found some nanotubes could have the same effects as the harmful carcinogen asbestos.

The study revealed that certain types of nanotubes could potentially cause lung cancers similar to mesothelioma cancer in consumers.

“There’s a debate occurring about the potential safety issues of nanotech and how to get around them,” explains the co-author of the study, Andrew Maynard.

Exposure to Nanomaterials Compared to Asbestos

Researchers are continuing to investigate what materials actually make up nanotubes and admit that they currently know little about the dangers of consuming these particles.

However, they do know that the ingestion or inhalation of such materials can have the effects of asbestos cancers on humans.

Those who handle or are exposed to products or air containing asbestos are at high risk for developing various forms of cancer, including lung cancer and mesothelioma cancer.
