Prostate Cancer – Learn More About Treatment Options

Prostate cancer is a common disease among the age of 40 and older. It can be referred to as a complex heterogeneous disease that works differently in different individuals. Hence, the treatment varies widely. There is wide array of treatments exists for this disease.

These include radiation, survey, dietary changes, hormone deprivation therapy, dietary changes, chemotherapy and use of different herbal supplements.

Hormonal therapy for prostate cancer is helpful in minimizing the testosterone levels in the body. There are also drugs that work towards minimizing production of testosterone via testicles. Lutenizing hormone releasing hormone or LH-RH against is usually administered under these cases. The results cannot be seen instantly. You require to be patient and wait for about 2-4 weeks once the therapy has started.

Another hormonal treatment is am option that can be used with anti androgens. These drugs function to block hormone. Antiandrogens such as nilutamide and fultamide tend to block the ability of the body to utilize androgens such as testosterone.

There is also a surgical process available known as Radical prostatectomy. Here surgeon removes entire prostate gland. The process is usually performed to remove trace of prostate cancer in its early stage. The surgery cannot be performed if the cancer has been spread to other parts of the patient’s body. There are several side effects of this surgery such as impotence and incontinence.

Castration or Orchiectomy is a type of surgical procedure that works towards completely removing the testicles. The whole process is effective and shows results instantly.

Cryosurgery is a technique that includes the process of freezing liquid nitrogen to exterminate cancer cells existing in the prostate. During this surgery, a warming catheter is inserted via the penis. This protects the urethra.

Radiation therapy is another widely used option. Here, high energy X-rays are used to kill cancer cells. Some experts also use subatomic particles for the same. These rays are beamed from a machine. Sometimes, these are also emitted via radioactive seeds that are implanted in the prostate.

Another treatment options for destroying prostate cancer cells is chemotherapy. During this treatment, certain drugs are introduced to the body through the blood streams. These drugs are very effective in destroying cells that tend to divide or grow at a rapid pace. Some of the most common side effects of chemotherapy include hair loss, nausea and tiredness.

Watchful waiting is another option recommended by the physicians. Here, the patient does not receive any active treatment unless any of the symptoms appear. These patients are advised to schedule regular checkup and then report any new symptoms they come across.

Experts feel that best treatment option is to diagnose the disease as early as possible. This is the best way to treat prostate cancer in an effective manner. You must report to the health care practitioner as soon as you notice any unusual change in the prostate condition.
