Choosing Bed Sheets for Your Baby

Submitted by marcela1

Choosing the right bedding for your baby is one of the most important tasks you face as a new parent. It entails getting the fabrics and materials that will be best for your baby's skin.

There are a number of options for new parent with regards to baby bedding, but there are also some factors to look out for. Certain types of bedding are better for a baby's skin than others.

Think of it this way: when you buy your bedding, you try to find that which feels best against your skin. Some materials make you uncomfortable because they're rough, like sheets whose thread count is too low.

Your baby's skin is much more sensitive than yours, and thus the type of bedding you buy for them requires more consideration. As a rule of thumb, if a material doesn't feel soft to your skin, it isn't appropriate for your baby's.

The best types of baby bedding are those made from cotton, like pure cotton weaves, jersey knits and flannel, and your baby's bedding should be made of highest quality fabric.

If you go with a jersey knit, it should have a measure of at least 150 gsm (grams per square meter). To put it into perspective, this is much softer than the average t-shirt, and almost as soft as flannel.

If you go with a pure cotton weave, they should be at least 280 thread count. While you can go higher, thread count maxes out between three and four hundred; sheet quality doesn't really increase after this point.

If you go with flannel sheets, make sure that your baby's room isn't too hot and keep in mind that if you're in a warmer or hot, humid environment, flannel sheets probably aren't the best choice.

Any flannel sheets should be the highest quality, which is anything 'double napped.' This means the material is twice as soft and durable than a normal flannel sheet.

Another tip to keep in mind: when buying your baby's sheets, whatever the material, make sure they have nice, deep pockets that are elasticized around the entire edge. This will prevent any slippage off your baby's bed and ensure a smooth, comfortable fit for your baby's bed.

Sheets should be made with deep pockets and are elasticized around the entire edge which prevents it from slipping off the mattress, thereby keeping your baby safe. These sheets are so durable that they will last all through your baby's growing years.
