Consequences of Head Injuries

Submitted by David Salt
Mon, 22 Feb 2010

Most people do as much as they can in order to prevent head injuries from even occurring. When driving or riding in a car, they make sure to fasten their seat belts. When riding their bicycle or a motorbike, they wear a properly designed helmet. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we find ourselves in a situation where a head injury occurs. Often times this can be to no fault of ours but rather to the negligence of others. In these situations, it is important to consult a solicitor to determine what legal recourse you have with your situation. There are many long term consequences that can occur as a result of head injuries. Often these consequences may require long term or in some cases lifelong care.

Depending upon the part of the brain that is injured as well as the severity of the head injury, many functions can be impaired. The injured party may experience a loss or vision. Their other senses may be affected. These would include hearing, taste and touch. Changes may also occur to their personality. They can also behave in a different manner than is normal for them. When experiences these kinds of complications, head injury patients may need a great deal of care in order to help them deal with or recover from the injury. Patients may need speech therapy from a speech pathologist in order to help regain their speech. Occupational therapy may be needed in order for the person to regain some of the abilities they had prior to the accident. Physical therapy is also needed in some cases to restore muscle strength.

The realm of the required services for the head injured patient varies depending upon the sort of injury they sustained as well as the resulting health complications. It is vitally important that they be able to receive these services to regain their way of life. Often times people are limited in their financial resources or lack of insurance to secure these services for themselves. This is further exacerbated when the head injury occurred due to someone else's negligence.

Therefore, if you or your loved one has been injured and sustained a head injury, seek out the services of a solicitor. They may advise you on your rights and help you seek any head injury compensation to which you are entitled.
